Let’s do a Sew In at home

2024/11/20 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! If you're anything like me, you love the look of a beautiful sew-in but maybe not the salon price tag or the time commitment. That's exactly why I decided to dive into the world of DIY sew-ins, and let me tell you, it's been a game-changer! Doing your own sew-in hair extensions at home can be incredibly rewarding, offering versatility and a chance to truly master your hair. Whether you're looking for a basic sew-in, a partial, or even a versatile sew-in with leave-out, the fundamentals are the same. This guide is all about sharing my personal tips and tricks for getting a gorgeous, long-lasting sew-in right from your own space. What You'll Need for Your At-Home Sew-In Before we jump into the 'how-to,' let's gather our essentials. Having everything organized makes the process so much smoother for a beginner. You'll need: Hair Extensions: Choose quality bundles that match your desired length and texture. This is your main investment! Weaving Needle & Thread: A curved needle is usually easiest for beginners, and strong weaving thread that matches your hair color. Combs & Clips: A rat-tail comb for parting, and sectioning clips to keep your natural hair out of the way. Scissors: For trimming thread and potentially the extensions. Hair Products: Shampoo, conditioner, a good leave-in, and some edge control or mousse for finishing. Braiding Hair (optional): If your natural hair is short or fine, a little braiding hair can help secure your cornrows. A Good Mirror (or two!): Essential for seeing the back of your head. Preparing Your Natural Hair: The Foundation is Key! This is a crucial step for any sew-in. Start with freshly washed and deep-conditioned hair. Make sure it's completely dry before you begin braiding. A good leave-in conditioner will protect your strands. The goal here is to create a flat, secure base for your extensions. For a basic sew-in, you'll want to cornrow your hair in a pattern that allows the wefts to lay flat. Many people opt for a circular pattern or straight back braids, depending on how you plan to style your sew-in. If you want a versatile sew-in with a leave-out, remember to section off the hair you intend to leave out before braiding. Braiding Your Hair: The Base for Your Sew-In Weave For beginners, I recommend starting with simple straight-back cornrows. The flatter your braids, the flatter your sew-in will lay. Ensure your braids aren't too tight, as this can cause discomfort and tension. If you're doing a leave-out, make sure the braids underneath are small and close together, so the wefts can be sewn neatly to them without showing through your leave-out. Once your braids are done, you can sew the ends together for extra security. Some people also like to use a weaving net over their braids for added stability, especially if their hair is very fine or they want extra protection. The "Sewing Hair" Process: Attaching Your Extensions Now for the fun part – attaching the hair! Start at the nape of your neck and work your way up. Thread your weaving needle and knot the end securely. Take your first weft of hair and place it against a cornrow. Begin sewing by pushing the needle through a small section of your cornrow, then through the weft, and back through the cornrow. Make sure your stitches are close together and secure to prevent the weft from coming loose. When you reach the end of a row, you can either cut the weft and start a new one (folded weft method to prevent shedding) or fold it over and continue to the next row (continuous method). I usually prefer the folded weft method to minimize shedding. Continue this process, ensuring each weft is laid flat and tight against your scalp, gradually working your way up to your crown. If you have a leave-out, sew the wefts around the perimeter of your leave-out, making sure they blend seamlessly. Finishing Touches and Maintenance Tips Once all your hair is sewn in, it's time to cut and style! Trim any loose threads. You can then straighten, curl, or cut your new extensions to your desired style. Don't forget to blend your leave-out (if you have one) with your extensions for a natural look. For maintenance, treat your sew-in just like your natural hair. Wash and condition regularly, focusing on cleansing your scalp and conditioning the extensions. Air dry or use a low-heat setting. At night, tie your hair up or use a silk bonnet to prevent tangling and preserve your style. With proper care, your DIY sew-in can last for weeks, giving you a beautiful and versatile hairstyle!
