Is this the best coral reef in the US?

I’m on the Big Island of Hawaii and was told by so many locals, including a marine biologist, that this bay has the best coral reef in the US, so I had to go.

It’s a 2 mile trek each way with 2000 ft elevation. I thought - 2 miles? That won’t be bad. So we woke up at the crack of dawn to go before it got hot out.

What I didn’t know was that there wasn’t really a true path after a while, and if you sat down, you could start getting stung by fire ants. Also, there are fruit trees along the way, but do NOT try to pull any fruit off, or you’ll get a bunch of fire ants falling onto your face.

Every quarter mile is marked by a number up to 8, so if you need to call for help, you can tell them which marker you are nearest to for help to reach you.

Finally we got down to the Captain Cook monument at Kealakekua Bay.

We zipped up our stuff nice and secure because the mongooses will steal your stuff if you don’t.

I hopped right in and it truly was such a beautiful reef full of marine life. A local told us that 1 out of every 4 times he comes here, there are dolphins that hang out all morning!

Afterwards we went back up around like 10 am, and it was already blistering hot. The trek up is so much harder than the way down.

If you decide to go on this trek down, make sure to bring at least a few liters of water per person and leave before it gets hot. It’s so worth it, but if you want to be safe, just hire a boat tour to get you there.
