Tips For A Damaged Skin Barrier
Simplifying your routine will get you right
1. Stop the Actives
Includes retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin, retinol), vitamin C, AHAs/BHAs (glycolic, salicylic, lactic acids), & physical scrubs for at least 2 to 4 weeks.
2. Gentle Cleansing
Switch to a non-foaming, cream, or oil-based cleanser with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. Wash only at night; in the morning, simply splash with lukewarm water.
3. Moisturize with Barrier-Repairing Ingredients
Look for products that have:
· Ceramides: The most crucial ingredient for restoring structure.
· Fatty Acids & Cholesterol: Help rebuild the lipid matrix.
· Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Stimulates the production of ceramides and reduces inflammation.
· Occlusives: Ingredients like petrolatum (Vaseline), squalane, or shea butter create a physical seal over the skin to stop water loss while healing occurs.
4. Protect
Apply mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide) every morning. UV damage halts the healing process and causes further inflammation.
From personal experience dealing with a damaged skin barrier, I’ve found that patience and gentle care are key to recovery. When my skin barrier was compromised, I noticed increased redness, dryness, and sensitivity to products I used daily. Following the advice to stop all active ingredients like retinoids and acids for several weeks allowed my skin to calm down and start healing. One crucial step was switching to a gentle, non-foaming cleanser with a balanced pH around 5. I also adopted the habit of only washing my face at night and simply rinsing with lukewarm water in the morning. This helped preserve natural oils and prevent further dryness. Moisturizing became my top priority. Using products rich in ceramides restored the skin’s protective layers effectively. Including niacinamide in my routine not only boosted ceramide production but also visibly reduced inflammation and redness. I also incorporated occlusive ingredients like squalane and a small amount of petroleum jelly at night to lock in moisture. Applying mineral-based sunscreen daily was essential to protect the healing barrier from UV damage, which can hinder recovery. I made sure to choose formulas with zinc oxide to avoid irritation. Throughout the process, I avoided physical scrubs and exfoliants, giving my skin time to rebuild. My skin gradually felt more resilient, hydrated, and comfortable. If you’re experiencing symptoms such as dryness, irritation, or flare-ups of conditions like eczema or rosacea, adopting these steps could significantly improve your skin health and prevent further damage.
This is the only toner I haven’t tried by Skin1004. Imma have to try it. I love the serum from the probio-cica line.
