9 Hair Growth Tips I Wish I Had Known Sooner!

Tip 1: Stop Using Heat Tools
The best thing I did to heal my damaged hair was ditch heat tools. Blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons cause major damage—even with heat protectant. It’s just not worth it. Give your hair a break, and it will thank you with healthier, stronger strands!
Tip 2: Sleep with Hair in a Protective Braid Style with Silk Pillowcases
Protect your hair while you sleep! A French or single braid can help reduce breakage and frizz overnight. Pair it with a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize static and wake up with smoother, healthier hair. Avoid popular heatless curling methods like heatless rods and sock curls, as they can put a lot of tension on your scalp overnight (these damaged my hair badly).
Tip 3: Invest in Quality Hair Care Products
Salon-quality shampoos and conditioners make a big difference for healthy, vibrant hair. They’re often sulfate- and paraben-free and formulated for better overall care. If they’re not in your budget, affordable vegan and organic options like Jason or Acure can still deliver great results! TJ Maxx and Marshall’s often carry salon hair care brands at affordable prices (Matrix and Joico are good options)
Tip 4: Drink Plenty of Water and Focus on Cleaner Eating
Never underestimate the impact of water and clean eating on hair health! Staying hydrated keeps your scalp healthy and promotes hair growth, while a nutrient-rich diet strengthens strands from within. When I switched to clean eating, my hair grew faster, felt thicker, and started to heal from damage. Your hair reflects what you put into your body, so nourishing it with the right foods and plenty of water makes all the difference!
Tip 5: Wash Hair Only Once a Week
Limiting hair washing has been a game-changer for me! I wash my hair just once a week, and it’s helped reduce breakage and improve growth. Overwashing can strip your scalp of natural oils, so giving your hair more time between washes keeps it healthier and stronger.
Tip 6: Use Hair Oils for Growth and Repair
Oils have made a huge difference in my hair health! I use Moroccanoil on the ends to keep them hydrated and smooth, rosemary oil on my scalp to stimulate growth, and coconut oil for deep conditioning treatments. These oils help reduce frizz, improve shine, and keep my hair strong and nourished!
Tip 7: Detangle Hair Gently with a Wide-Toothed Comb (Wet) and Boar Bristle Brush (Dry Only)
Always detangle your hair gently to prevent breakage. Use a wide-toothed comb when your hair is wet to minimize damage, and a boar bristle brush when dry to smooth and add shine without causing stress to your hair. For thicker hair like mine, section into parts before combing.
Tip 8: Wash Hair in Lukewarm or Cold Water (Not Hot)
As a fan of very hot showers, this one took me a while to realize. Washing your hair with cold or lukewarm water helps preserve moisture and prevent damage. Hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and more prone to breakage. You can still take hot showers, just avoid the hair!
Tip 9: Partially Dry Hair with Microfiber Towel and Blow Dryer on Cool-Setting Before Styling
On wash days, it’s best not to let your hair air dry completely. After applying your products, gently remove excess moisture with a microfiber towel, then use a blow dryer on the cool setting to dry it partially. This helps maintain hair health by preventing excessive moisture buildup and reduces the risk of breakage. I then braid my hair when it’s about 80% dry for a protective style!
