How I Deep Clean a Dirty Oven 🫧
I always forget about cleaning the oven - until I notice how dirty it’s gotten’ Between my cooking and my husband’s kitchen experiments, it gets messy fast.
Having a clean oven helps food cook more evenly, prevents smoke, and just makes the kitchen feel fresher. I typically deep clean mine every 3-6 months to prevent it from getting out of hand, and this is how I do it using zero harsh chemicals:
-I use white vinegar, baking soda, a scrubbing brush, steel wool (for the racks), a spray bottle, and a flat-edge razor. You will also need several cleaning rags you don’t mind getting dirty!
-First, I remove the racks from the oven and set them in the sink. This frees up room in the oven for cleaning.
-I mix equal parts hot water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and shake the mixture.
-Then I spray the vinegar water mixture all throughout the oven, making sure it’s saturated. Avoid spraying the fan in the back or heating mechanism at the top.
-I pour baking soda over the vinegar - the reaction causes a fizzing which lifts the oven grime. It’s pretty satisfying to watch!
-Let this solution sit for at least an hour, maybe longer. The longer it sits the more effectively it cleans.
-While I wait, I scrub the racks with the steel sponge. I spray the vinegar on the sponge, and then sort of wrap the steel around each grate to remove grease from each side.
-After the solutions sits for a while, I go in with my scrubbing brush and scrub in circular motions to break up the grime.
-For really tough stains, I use my flat-edge razor blade at an angle to scrape them away.
-After it’s sufficiently clean, I wipe the oven down with a clean damp rag to remove all of the vinegar and baking soda - you’ll probably need a few!
And that’s it - a deep cleaned oven using no harsh chemicals! Depending on how dirty your oven is, and how long you let the solution sit, you will most likely have to put in a little elbow grease. But it’s totally worth it in the end!

Keeping your oven clean is essential not only for maintaining a fresh kitchen but also for ensuring that your food cooks evenly. Using natural cleaning products like white vinegar and baking soda is a great way to avoid harsh chemicals. This method is effective and environmentally friendly, making it perfect for households with children or pets. Start by removing the oven racks and soaking them in a solution of warm water and vinegar to loosen any grime. Then, mix equal parts of hot water and vinegar in a spray bottle and apply it thoroughly inside the oven while avoiding sensitive areas like the fan and heating elements. The reaction between vinegar and baking soda is where the magic happens; when baking soda is sprinkled on the wet surfaces, it will bubble up, lifting away grease and stains. Let the solution sit for at least an hour, allowing it to penetrate tough stains, which makes scrubbing significantly easier. While the solution works, scrub the racks and any other removable parts with a steel wool sponge dipped in vinegar for added cleaning power. After the waiting period, scrub the oven with a brush in circular motions, focusing on stubborn areas. For the toughest stains that persist, use a flat-edge razor to carefully scrape them away. Finally, wipe down the interior with a damp rag to remove any residue from cleaning solutions. You may need several clean rags to ensure all residues are removed. By following these steps, you'll have a sparkling clean oven ready for your next culinary adventures!
