Cleaning Tips I Learned from Mom 🧺
Growing up, I didn’t think much about it, but my mom had a way of keeping our home clean that made everything feel easier. I used to take it for granted, just thinking it was “how things were,” but now I notice how much I still use the habits she taught me. Some of them are so small, but they make a big difference in keeping a home clean and comfortable every day. Here are the routines I picked up from my mom that I still do:
1) Load dishes throughout the day
I try to wash or load dishes as I use them so I never have a huge sink to deal with at the end of the day. Mom always did this, and it’s one of those habits that makes life feel easier.
2) Make the bed each morning
Making the bed only takes a minute, but it immediately makes the bedroom feel more put together and gives the day a small sense of order.
3) Wipe down the shower after use
A quick swipe after every shower keeps soap scum and water spots from sticking and makes deep cleaning easier later - I keep a squeegee in my shower for this.
4) Fold laundry right away
I fold clothes as soon as they’re dry so I’m not staring at a pile later. This is one my mom did all the time, and it’s stuck with me.
5) Clean counters each evening
I wipe the counters at the end of the day. It only takes a couple of minutes, but it makes the kitchen feel ready for the next day and prevents mess from building up.
6) Clean the sink after washing dishes
After doing the dishes, I wipe down the sink so leftover food bits don’t stick. It keeps the area clean and reduces buildup.
7) Vacuum or sweep hotspots daily
High-traffic areas get messy fast, so I sweep or vacuum every day. It’s quick and stops crumbs and dust from piling up.
Watching my mom over the years has taught me a lot, and it’s made me realize just how much we can learn from our moms in general. The little things they do every day really stick with you. These tips have really helped me keep my home clean each day, and I’m so thankful I learned them!
Maintaining a clean and comfortable home can feel overwhelming at times, but adopting simple, consistent habits like those shared here can truly transform your daily routine. By loading and washing dishes throughout the day, you avoid the dreaded chore of tackling a mountain of dishes later, making kitchen cleanup manageable and stress-free. Making your bed each morning instantly brings order to your bedroom, creating a fresh and welcoming space to start your day. A quick wipe down of the shower after every use is a powerful trick to prevent soap scum and mildew buildup, especially when using a squeegee. This saves time and effort when deep cleaning is needed later. Folding laundry right after drying not only prevents wrinkles but also stops laundry baskets from piling up, keeping your space neat and uncluttered. Evening counters wipe-downs help eliminate crumbs and lingering smells, which can attract pests, while also preparing your kitchen for the next day. Cleaning the sink after washing dishes removes leftover food bits and prevents residue buildup, enhancing cleanliness. Daily vacuuming or sweeping of high-traffic hotspots prevents dirt, hair, and crumbs from amassing, keeping your floors consistently tidy.
