Not a professional dancer, but WOW… what an experience.
I was invited to learn choreography from MJ The Musical — live on the stage of the Neil Simon Theatre — led by legendary choreographers Rich + Tone!
I tried my absolute best, had SO much fun, and the moonwalk definitely humbled me 💀 but I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity.
Thank you @Broadway Direct for the invite — truly unforgettable 🖤

Okay, so you've seen my amazing (and slightly embarrassing!) attempt at MJ's moves, but I wanted to dive a little deeper into who made this experience so incredible and who truly shaped Michael Jackson's iconic style. First off, let's talk about Rich + Tone. When I heard these two legends were leading the class, my jaw dropped! They're not just choreographers; they are the choreographers behind some of the biggest names in music. Imagine learning from the same minds who've crafted routines for Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, and yes, even the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson! Their energy was infectious, and you could feel their deep respect for MJ's legacy in every step they taught. They shared little anecdotes about working with these stars, which made the whole experience feel even more exclusive and personal. It really brings home who you're learning from – not just skilled dancers, but true artists who understand the nuance of performance. Speaking of Michael Jackson, who could forget his unparalleled impact on dance? We focused on the intro to 'Billie Jean' – a song that instantly brings to mind his signature moves. It wasn't just about learning steps; it was about understanding the essence of MJ. Rich + Tone broke down his iconic elements: the sharp, robotic body isolation that made him seem otherworldly, the smooth yet powerful hip movements, and of course, the legendary moonwalk. They even touched on his famous crotch grab, explaining the intent behind it as a part of his performance persona. It’s mind-blowing to think who came up with these moves that are still instantly recognizable decades later. They truly transformed popular dance. This whole experience reinforced for me who are the unsung heroes behind the magic on stage – the choreographers. They translate vision into movement, making the impossible look effortless. If you're passionate about dance or just a huge MJ fan, understanding the role of people like Rich + Tone is key. It's not just about the star; it's about the team who helps bring that star's vision to life. And for anyone wondering who might get an opportunity like this, honestly, it felt like pure luck, but also a testament to engaging with communities like Broadway Direct. Keeping an eye on their social media and newsletters is how I stumbled upon this. It really shows that these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities do exist for fans like us. So, if you dream of dancing on a Broadway stage or meeting the choreographers behind your favorite artists, keep those eyes peeled! You never know who might invite you next. This entire journey was a masterclass not just in dance, but in appreciating the incredible talent who bring these stories and movements to life.
