One of my old coworkers told me that their friend put their flowers in the refrigerator to preserve them. I mean it makes sense because if you go to a floral shop, most of them have fridges in there.!

Okay, so you read my little secret about using the refrigerator for roses, right? I was so excited when my coworker mentioned it because it just clicked – florists do it all the time! But after trying it myself, I've learned a few more things that make a huge difference in really preserving those stunning blooms we all love. First off, it's not just about tossing them in. I found that prepping your roses is absolutely key. When I bring a fresh bouquet home, I always re-cut the stems at an angle under running water. This helps them drink better. Then, I remove any leaves that would fall below the waterline in their vase, or if I'm storing them dry, I remove most of the lower leaves to prevent decay. You want to make sure they're not too wet going into the fridge, or you might encourage mold, which is definitely not what we want! The ideal scenario for me is to give them a good drink of water with flower food for a few hours first, then gently dry the stems and petals if storing them dry. If you have space, keeping them in a vase with fresh water inside the fridge works wonders too! Just make sure your fridge isn't too cold – around 37-40°F (3-4°C) is perfect. Anything colder might cause freeze damage. I usually clear out a shelf in my vegetable crisper drawer, which often has slightly higher humidity, making it a great spot. My experience has shown that this method can surprisingly extend their life by an extra week, sometimes even more! Especially for those special occasion roses you just can't bear to part with. When I'm ready to display them again, I try not to shock them. I let them acclimate to room temperature gradually for about an hour before putting them in their final spot. This transition helps prevent wilting and ensures they look their best. However, it's not foolproof. One thing I've learned is to keep them away from fruits and vegetables that release ethylene gas (like apples and bananas). This gas can accelerate ripening and wilting in flowers, totally counteracting your preservation efforts! Also, ensure your fridge is clean, as any strong odors can affect your delicate roses. While I love how I preserve my flowers this way, it does take up fridge space, which can be a downside if you have a small kitchen! Another tip I swear by, even if you're not using the fridge, is changing the water daily and re-cutting the stems every couple of days. And always, always use flower food! That little packet isn't just for show. Combining these methods really maximizes the freshness. It's truly amazing how a little effort can make your beautiful roses last so much longer, allowing you to enjoy their beauty for days beyond what you'd expect!
