I wish I didn’t let people tell me I had to work bedside before I chose a specialty in nursing…
I understand that bedside nursing is important for many, but for me, it felt like a detour from where I truly wanted to be. The OR offers a structured, task-oriented environment with the benefits of working regular dayshift hours—no weekends, no holidays. It’s a different kind of challenge, one that aligns with my strengths and interests. I believe nurses should be allowed to pursue the path that excites them and leverages their talents, rather than feeling pressured to follow a traditional route that may not be right for them. The OR is where I can thrive, and I wish I had been able to dive into it right from the start, without the detour of bedside nursing. Sooooo take this as your sign to go into a specialty right out of nursing school if bedside sounds just as bad as it did for me! I promise you won’t regret it <3
