Having attended Pride events in the past, I’ve noticed how much the celebration has evolved, sometimes in ways that make many uncomfortable, especially parents. Many argue that Pride was originally about love and acceptance, but over time, certain displays and behaviors at some events appear increasingly adult-oriented and explicit, which makes it difficult to bring children along. I remember one parade where individuals wore provocative attire and engaged in acts that didn’t align with my own sense of what public family events should entail. It’s worth acknowledging that many LGBTQ+ individuals have fought hard for equal rights and societal acceptance, and Pride played an important role in this fight. However, the visibility and approach to Pride events today often seem influenced by political motives and commercialization. Corporations adopt Pride branding during the month to appear supportive, but often quietly withdraw once the trend passes, which can come across as insincere. Additionally, I’ve observed that some portrayals at Pride diverge significantly from mainstream societal norms, which can create tension and misunderstanding. It’s challenging when certain festivities clash with personal values or cultural expectations. While supporting equality and respect for all people is crucial, it’s also important to consider how celebrations affect communities as a whole, including families and children. Ultimately, I believe that while Pride should celebrate love and diversity, it should also be mindful of inclusiveness in the traditional sense, ensuring that events are respectful and appropriate for a broad audience. Parents deserve transparency about what to expect, and communities should engage in open dialogues about the impact of these celebrations. This perspective doesn’t come from hatred but from a desire to see respectful coexistence and understanding among people with different viewpoints.
