Charlie,
Today would have been your birthday. And even though you’re no longer here with us, I still need to say the things I never got the chance to say out loud.
You inspired me to speak out.
Before I ever heard you, I mostly stayed quiet. I watched the culture change, felt the pressure to keep my head down, and told myself it wasn’t worth the risk. Then I found your voice. You didn’t just make arguments — you modeled courage. You showed that it was possible to stand firmly for what you believe without apology and without waiting for permission. That example gave me the push I needed. Because of you, I found my own voice.
What always struck me even more was how patient and gracious you were with people like me. I’m not someone with a big platform or special access. I’m just one of the many who reached out, asked questions, or simply showed up. You never made me feel small for it. You answered. You treated ordinary people with respect. You made time. That kind of generosity is rare, and it leaves a mark that doesn’t fade just because you’re gone.
You spent your life pouring yourself into young people, into free speech, and into reminding a generation that truth still matters. Along the way, you were kind to the rest of us who were just trying to find our footing. That combination — boldness paired with genuine graciousness — is why so many of us miss you so deeply.
So on this day that should have been a celebration of another year of your life, I simply want to say thank you. Thank you for the courage you modeled. Thank you for the patience and kindness you showed people like me. And thank you for reminding us that speaking out is not only possible — it’s necessary.
We miss you, Charlie.
Happy birthday in Heaven.
With deep gratitude and love.
