Guide to Orcas Island Washington

Orca's Island is one of my favorite spots for a early summer trip! Take the ferry with your car included, and head to the island.

Be sure to book lodging and your ferry in advance, due to the size of this island, lodging is limited.

1. Seafood on the island is incredible, especially if you like oysters! Buck Bay Shellfish Farm is a must visit!

2. Taking the ferry is fun for all ages! Leave the car parked and go for a walk and enjoy the ride.

3. Drive around the island for beautiful views. Drive or hike to the top of Mount Constitution for epic views!

... Read moreOrcas Island truly captured my heart on my last early summer adventure! If you're planning a trip and looking for the ultimate Orcas Island itinerary, you've come to the right place. I'm excited to share my personal tips and favorite spots to help you make the most of your visit. First things first, planning is key, especially when it comes to getting there and finding a place to stay. I can't stress enough how important it is to book your ferry reservations and lodging well in advance. This charming island is small, and accommodations fill up quickly, particularly during peak season. Taking the Washington State Ferry is part of the adventure itself! Drive your car on, then stretch your legs and enjoy the scenic ride across the Puget Sound. The views are incredible, and it’s a relaxing way to begin your island escape. Now, let's talk about the food, specifically the seafood. If you love fresh oysters as much as I do, then a visit to Buck Bay Shellfish Farm is an absolute must-add to your Orcas Island itinerary. This place is a gem! I remember picking up the freshest oysters and clams directly from their farm stand. They even have picnic tables where you can shuck your own right there, enjoying them with a squeeze of lemon and the stunning bay view. It's such a unique, authentic experience that you won't find just anywhere. Beyond oysters, they often have fresh crab and other local catches, making it a perfect spot for a gourmet picnic or to grab ingredients for a home-cooked meal if your lodging has kitchen access. For breathtaking panoramic views, you absolutely have to drive or hike up to the top of Mount Constitution in Moran State Park. The drive itself is beautiful, winding through lush forests, but the reward at the summit is truly epic. On a clear day, you can see across the San Juan Islands, the Olympic Mountains, and even Mount Baker. It’s an ideal spot for photography, a picnic, or just soaking in the natural beauty. I recommend going early in the morning for fewer crowds and often clearer skies. Beyond these highlights, my ideal Orcas Island itinerary would also include exploring the charming village of Eastsound. It’s the island's main hub, filled with art galleries, unique boutiques, and fantastic restaurants. I loved browsing the local shops and grabbing a coffee at a cozy cafe. Consider spending an afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding in the calm waters, or even embarking on a whale-watching tour for a chance to spot orcas (how fitting!) or other marine wildlife. The island offers so many opportunities for outdoor activities, from gentle strolls along the shore to more challenging hikes. Remember to pack layers, as the weather can change quickly, and bring your camera because every corner of Orcas Island seems to offer a postcard-perfect view. My trip was filled with unforgettable moments, and I hope these tips help you craft your own perfect Orcas Island adventure!
