... Read moreWow, what an incredible adventure it was driving up to the summit of Pikes Peak! If you’re planning a #roadtrip to this iconic Colorado landmark, you’re in for a treat. I recently made the journey, and trust me, it’s an experience you won't forget. Many of you might be wondering, 'how long does it really take to drive up Pikes Peak?' Let me share my personal experience and some tips to help you prepare for your own #coloradoadventure. First off, the Pikes Peak Highway is a 19-mile scenic drive that takes you from over 7,800 feet to the breathtaking 14,115-foot summit. The official park website often states it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to drive up, and another 1 to 1.5 hours to descend, not including any stops. From my own trip, I’d say that’s a pretty accurate estimate if you're driving non-stop. However, who wants to drive non-stop when there are so many photo opportunities and incredible viewpoints along the way? For my group, the entire Pikes Peak trip, including numerous stops for photos, admiring the scenery, and spending about an hour at the summit, took closer to 4-5 hours round trip. We started our ascent in the morning, which I highly recommend to avoid potential afternoon thunderstorms and larger crowds. The road itself is well-maintained, but it's a winding mountain road with hairpin turns, so take it slow and enjoy the views. There are several pull-offs where you can safely stop and soak in the panoramic vistas, and trust me, you'll want to. One of the most important things to remember for your Pikes Peak trip is your car. Make sure your brakes are in good condition, especially for the descent. There are brake checks on the way down to ensure your brakes aren't overheating. Also, the air gets thinner as you go higher, so be prepared for cooler temperatures at the summit, even in summer. Layering is key! We saw everything from t-shirts to heavy jackets up top. Don't forget water and snacks – hydration is crucial for preventing altitude sickness. Speaking of altitude, it's real! Even if you're generally fit, the high elevation can affect you. Take it easy at the summit, walk slowly, and listen to your body. We spent some time enjoying the famous Pikes Peak donuts at the summit house – a must-try! The views from 14,115 feet are absolutely spectacular, offering a 360-degree panorama that feels like you're on top of the world. Seeing the clouds below you is truly magical. This #adventure to Pikes Peak was definitely a highlight of our #roadtripitinerary. If you're wondering what kind of car you need, honestly, any reliable vehicle can make it. We drove a standard SUV, and it handled the inclines and curves perfectly. The key is driving cautiously and being aware of your surroundings. So, if a Pikes Peak trip is on your bucket list, don't hesitate! Plan your stops, take your time, and prepare to be amazed by the beauty of the Colorado Rockies.
