My non-aesthetic fridge

It's so refreshing to see a post celebrating the real fridge! We're constantly bombarded with those perfectly organized, aesthetic restock videos, but let's be honest, for most of us, that's just not practical or sustainable. My fridge is definitely more 'lived-in' than 'magazine-ready,' and I bet many of you can relate! It's not about being boring, it's about being functional. Embracing a non-aesthetic fridge doesn't mean it has to be a chaotic mess. It just means prioritizing practicality over perfection. For me, it's about making sure I can quickly find what I need and minimize food waste. Here are a few things I've learned to keep my 'normal' fridge working for me: Designate Zones (Loosely!): Even if it's not Instagram-worthy, having a general idea of where things go helps. Dairy on one shelf, produce in the drawers, leftovers (like that leftover pizza or sandwich fixings!) on another. This cuts down on rummaging time and keeps things somewhat tidy without the pressure. First In, First Out (FIFO): This simple rule is a game-changer for avoiding forgotten food. When I buy new groceries, I try to put older items to the front so they get used first. It’s not always perfectly executed, but it helps avoid that mystery science experiment at the back of the shelf. Meal Prep & Leftover Smarts: Life gets busy, and having easy-to-grab meals is essential. I often prep some ingredients or make extra dinner for lunch the next day. Storing these in clear, reusable containers makes them visible and appealing, even if they aren't color-coordinated. Those clear containers are key for seeing what you have and preventing food from going bad because it's hidden. Quick Clean-Ups: A full deep-clean might only happen monthly, but quick wipe-downs of spills or sticky spots keep things manageable. It prevents the fridge from becoming truly gross and makes the bigger clean less daunting. Now, let's talk about 'non fridge food' – items that often end up in the cold but might be better off elsewhere! This is something I've actively worked on to free up fridge space and keep certain foods tasting their best. For example, did you know that things like tomatoes lose their flavor and texture in the fridge? They're much happier on the counter. Same goes for avocados (until they're ripe), onions, and potatoes, which prefer a cool, dark pantry. And yes, even garlic – often referred to as 'arlic' in some kitchens – is best stored at room temperature in a dry, dark place to prevent sprouting and mold. Keeping these out of the fridge creates more room for actual perishables and ensures they stay fresh longer in their ideal conditions. Ultimately, a non-aesthetic fridge is a sign of a well-used, practical kitchen. It means you're cooking, eating, and living life. Don't let social media make you feel like your perfectly functional, real-life fridge isn't good enough!
