KEEP IT FRESSSSHHHHH
Now that grocery prices are increasing drastically, trust and believe I'm not trying to waste anything.
We have to stop being lazy and take those vegetables and fruits out of the plastic it comes in!!!
That being said this is what I do:
~ make sure you wash your green onions thoroughly
~ fill a mason jar with cold water
~ put your green onions in the jar and put a freezer ziplock bag over the top

I’ve found that keeping green onions fresh can be tricky, especially when grocery prices soar and every bit of produce counts. One useful tip that really works for me is to start by washing the green onions thoroughly to remove any dirt or residues. Afterward, placing them upright in a mason jar filled with cold water helps keep the roots hydrated, which mirrors how they grow naturally. Covering the tops loosely with a freezer ziplock bag creates a mini greenhouse effect, maintaining humidity and slowing down wilting. This method, inspired by everyday kitchen hacks, can keep green onions crisp and vibrant for up to a week or even longer. I also recommend changing the water every two days to prevent any bacterial build-up which can spoil the vegetables faster. From personal experience, removing green onions from their plastic packaging immediately after buying is essential since trapped moisture inside the bag leads to rapid spoilage. Instead, transferring them to this mason jar setup allows for better air circulation and controlled moisture. Additionally, this technique isn’t just limited to green onions—other delicate herbs and vegetables benefit from similar storage methods. It’s a budget-friendly way to reduce food waste and stretch your grocery dollars without sacrificing freshness or flavor.
