Within 5 mins of starting the dryer I knew where my kids got the "burying treasure in the laundry" from. I pulled out all the wet laundry from the dryer. As I reached into the drum, my fingers brushed against something hard and metallic. I frowned, fishing it out.

I exhaled sharply, turning the worn handle in my hands. Of course. This was his. The same knife I’d seen clipped to his jeans, the one he used for everything—opening boxes, trimming loose threads, cutting zip ties. And now, apparently, tumbling through a full dry cycle with our clothes.

He shrugged. “Guess I’ll finally get some new ones.”
