But lately, I've been thinking a lot about my MK5 Supra's stock exhaust – the one it came with right off the lot. There’s a certain nostalgia looking back, and honestly, I think it often gets a bad rap. When I see posts about 'stock tone,' it makes me reflect on my own experience. When I first got my Supra here in California (shoutout to my fellow 81M80 drivers, you know the drill!), I was immediately impressed by the B58 engine, but like many, I wondered how long it would be before I swapped out the exhaust. The internet is full of videos comparing aftermarket systems, all promising more pops, crackles, and a generally louder, more aggressive sound. And don't get me wrong, those can be amazing! But let's talk about the stock tone for a minute. For a factory exhaust, it's surprisingly well-engineered. It's not obnoxious, which is a huge plus for daily driving. No annoying drone on the freeway, which is something many aftermarket systems struggle with. I remember driving through some scenic routes in California, enjoying the quiet hum on long stretches, and then getting a surprisingly satisfying growl when I pushed the accelerator through a canyon road. In Sport mode, you definitely got a more pronounced sound, a deeper rumble that hinted at the power under the hood without screaming for attention. It's a mature sound, if that makes sense – sophisticated rather than raw. Many enthusiasts are quick to dismiss it as 'too quiet,' 'boring,' or 'not sounding like a Supra should.' But is 'loud' always better? For me, there's a practical side. Having a car that doesn't annoy the neighbors or draw constant unwanted attention can be a blessing. Plus, you avoid any potential issues with local noise regulations, which can be pretty strict in some areas, especially in California. The stock exhaust is designed for legality and everyday usability, and it excels at that. It's also worth considering the cost savings – that money saved can go towards other mods or just enjoying the car! I've had friends ride along who weren't 'car people,' and they often commented on how smooth and comfortable the ride was, partly due to the lack of excessive exhaust noise. It allowed for conversations without shouting and made longer trips much more enjoyable. It also meant I could still enjoy the fantastic JBL sound system without fighting exhaust noise. For anyone curious about the 'latest' opinions on stock exhausts, I'd say give it a fair chance. Don't just dismiss it because it's OEM. So, who is the stock exhaust really for? I'd say it's perfect for someone who uses their Supra as a daily driver, appreciates subtlety, or simply isn't looking to spend thousands on an aftermarket system right away. It's also great for those who value comfort and compliance. While I eventually upgraded for a different experience, I honestly have a lot of respect for the factory setup. It might not be the loudest, but it's a testament to BMW's engineering with the B58, providing a balanced, capable, and surprisingly enjoyable soundtrack for the MK5 Supra. If you're on the fence about keeping yours, spend some time with it. You might find yourself appreciating its understated charm more than you'd expect!
