Hey fellow collectors! I saw you were curious about getting into Funko Pop collecting, and trust me, it's a super fun journey! My own collection is growing, and while it's just getting started (you can see some of my faves like Stitch, Hulk, and even spooky Oogie Boogie in the pictures!), I've picked up a few tips along the way that I wish I knew when I first started. So, if you're thinking about diving into the world of these adorable vinyl figures, here’s my personal guide to getting started and building a collection you'll love! 1. Find Your Focus (and Your Faves!): First things first: what do you love? There are thousands of Funko Pops out there, from Marvel heroes like Hulk to classic icons like Marilyn Monroe, and even beloved animated characters such as Moana or a Minion. Trying to collect everything can be overwhelming and expensive. I usually focus on themes I'm passionate about, like horror (hello, Chucky and Beetlejuice!) or Disney. This helps narrow down your search and makes each new addition feel more special. Don't be afraid to only collect characters you truly adore, even if it's just one from a series, like an Alexander Hamilton or a unique Jack Skellington. 2. Where to Hunt for Your Pops: Once you know what you're looking for, where do you buy them? I've had luck in a few places: Local Stores: Target, Walmart, GameStop, and independent comic book shops often have a good selection. The best part? You can inspect the box condition in person, which is super important for many collectors! Online Retailers: Amazon, Entertainment Earth, Pop In A Box, and Big Bad Toy Store are fantastic for pre-orders and finding specific ones that might be harder to locate locally. Conventions/Events: If you're lucky enough to go to a comic con or similar event, you might find exclusive or vaulted Pops. These can sometimes be rare gems! 3. Protect Your Precious Pops: You've found them, now protect them! Most collectors (myself included!) keep their Pops in their original boxes, and for good reason—it helps maintain their value and keeps them dust-free. I use clear plastic protectors for my more valuable or favorite pieces. They're pretty inexpensive and offer great peace of mind, especially if you're displaying them. Also, try to keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent any fading of the box art or the Pop itself. 4. Displaying Your Collection with Flair: This is where your personality shines! Some people use simple shelves, others have dedicated display cases, and some even create elaborate dioramas. I personally love arranging mine by theme or color. Seeing my Stitch next to Moana, or my horror icons like Chucky and Beetlejuice together, tells a story and makes the collection feel more cohesive. Don't be afraid to get creative with how you show off your growing treasures—after all, they're meant to be admired! 5. Join the Community & Understand Value: Don't collect alone! Join online communities like Facebook groups, Reddit forums, or even apps like Pop Price Guide. These are fantastic resources to learn about upcoming releases, trade with other collectors, and even get an idea of a Pop's current market value. It's exciting to connect with others who share your passion. Remember, collecting should primarily be fun, so don't stress too much about value unless that's your main goal.
