18 Laws of Power (Part 2)

Continuing my journey through the Laws of Power, I've found some truly eye-opening principles in Part 2 that have completely shifted my mindset. Specifically, the ideas around how absence impacts respect and the wisdom of not committing too quickly have been game-changers for me, both personally and professionally. It’s not about manipulation, but about understanding human nature and strategic interaction. Let's talk about Law 08: 'Use absence to increase respect.' I used to be the person who was always available, always quick to respond, always present. I thought being constantly accessible made me valuable, but honestly, it often led to me being taken for granted. There were times I’d be in a group chat, always the first to reply, only to find my input wasn't always given the attention I felt it deserved. Then I stumbled upon this law, which teaches that 'absence will tell the importance of presence.' It resonated so deeply. I realized that by always being there, I wasn’t giving people a chance to miss me or truly appreciate my contributions. The OCR wisely states, 'absence building presence,' and it's so true. I started practicing strategic unavailability – not ghosting, but simply taking a bit longer to respond, or not always being the first to jump into every social plan. The shift was almost immediate. People started seeking me out more, valuing my opinions when I did offer them, and genuinely seemed to 'keep people wanting more' of my presence. It’s a subtle art, but by stepping back sometimes, you actually make your presence more impactful and increase the respect others have for you. It taught me that my time and energy are valuable, and distributing them wisely makes a huge difference. Then there's Law 10: 'Don't commit too quickly.' This one hit home especially hard for me. In my eagerness to be helpful or to seize opportunities, I often used to jump into commitments without fully weighing all the options or considering the long-term implications. I remember a project at work where I immediately volunteered for a complex role, only to find myself overwhelmed and locked into a situation that wasn't ideal. The principle of 'staying adaptable' by not committing too quickly is incredibly powerful. By holding back, even for a short period, you give yourself time to assess the situation, observe others' eagerness, and negotiate from a stronger position. It ties into Law 09, 'make others depend on you,' because if you're not fully committed, others might work harder to secure your involvement, giving you leverage. It also connects with Law 11, 'hide your true plans.' When you don't commit immediately, you keep your options open and your strategy private, allowing you to react to unfolding circumstances rather than being bound by a premature decision. Now, I make it a point to say, 'Let me think about that and get back to you,' or 'I need to review my current schedule before confirming.' This simple practice has allowed me to choose commitments that truly align with my goals, conserve my energy, and maintain a reputation for thoughtful decision-making, as highlighted in Law 12, 'protect your reputation.' These laws aren't about being manipulative; they're about being strategic and understanding the dynamics of human interaction. Applying these principles has truly fostered my self-growth and prompted a significant mindset shift, allowing me to navigate situations with greater confidence and influence.
