Losing a loved one takes a toll

2025/1/2 Edited to

... Read moreLosing someone you love profoundly reshapes your world. It truly takes a toll, and for me, getting that call about my brother Mickey dying sent me into a spiral I never imagined. One moment, life felt predictable, and the next, everything was irrevocably altered. It was a raw, aching pain that felt like an artist had poured his heart out onto a canvas, leaving all the messy, beautiful agony exposed. I remember feeling completely adrift. Suddenly, I was 29, and the notion of 'time to focus on yourself' felt almost impossible amidst the crushing weight of grief. How do you even begin to focus when your entire world feels out of focus? It takes time, time, and more time, as they say, but it also takes finding anchors, small things that can pull you back to yourself, even just for a moment. For me, one of those unexpected anchors came in the form of music, specifically the beautiful and haunting lyrics of Birds of Tokyo’s 'Lanterns.' I stumbled upon it during a time when I desperately needed something to articulate what I couldn't. The song became a gentle, guiding light in my darkest hours. Its verses spoke of resilience, of finding a path forward even when shrouded in darkness, and of the enduring hope that flickers within us. Each line felt like a whispered understanding, a shared acknowledgment of the struggle, but also a promise of eventual clarity. It wasn't just background noise; it was therapy, helping me process emotions I didn’t even know I was holding onto. Dealing with grief is intensely personal, but I've learned a few things on my journey that might resonate with others grappling with loss. Firstly, allow yourself to feel everything. There's no right or wrong way to grieve, and bottling up emotions only postpones the healing. Let the tears come, let the anger surface, let the numbness pass. Secondly, find your outlets. For some, it's talking to loved ones or a therapist; for others, it's creative expression. Like an artist, I found solace in expressing my 'heart out' in different ways, and music was a huge part of that. Listening to songs like 'Lanterns' where the lyrics felt so profoundly personal was incredibly cathartic. Thirdly, remember the importance of self-compassion. The OCR mentioned 'focus on yourself at 25,' and while my turning point came a little later, the sentiment is universal. It’s okay to step back, to prioritize your own well-being, and to give yourself permission to heal at your own pace. This might mean setting boundaries, rediscovering old hobbies, or simply allowing yourself moments of quiet reflection. It’s about rebuilding, brick by painful brick. Finally, hold onto hope. It’s not about forgetting your loved one, but about learning to carry their memory with you as you continue to live. The 'Lanterns' lyrics, for me, symbolize that enduring light—the love that remains, guiding you forward. This journey is long, but you are not alone, and there is always a way to find your focus again.
