Unknown phone call
Do you answer calls if you don’t recognize the number
We've all been there, right? Your phone buzzes, you glance down, and there it is: 'Unknown Number.' That moment of hesitation... should I answer? It's a question I've wrestled with so many times, and honestly, it can be a bit of a gamble! My 'Fun Story Time' with an Unknown Caller Just last week, I got a call like this. I was busy, so I let it go to voicemail. Lo and behold, it was my doctor's office with an important appointment reminder! Totally legitimate, but I almost missed it. This isn't always the case, though. I’ve also had calls that turned out to be clearly spam, like someone trying to sell me extended car warranties for a car I don’t even own! So, how do you navigate this daily dilemma? Why Unknown Numbers Call (and Why You Should Be Wary) Most of the time, unknown calls are from: Scammers: Posing as banks, government agencies, or tech support to steal your information or money. Telemarketers: Trying to sell you products or services. Robocalls: Automated messages, often for scams or sales. Wrong numbers: Simple mistakes happen! Legitimate businesses/people: Sometimes, a delivery driver, a new contact, or a medical office might call from an unlisted or temporary number. The sheer volume of spam and scam calls makes us naturally cautious. Answering can sometimes signal to spammers that your number is active, leading to even more unwanted calls. So, What Should You Do When an Unknown Number Rings? Here's my personal strategy and some tips I've picked up: Let it Go to Voicemail (My Go-To Move): This is my number one recommendation. If it's truly important, the caller will leave a message. This gives you time to vet the call without engaging directly. Check Your Voicemail Promptly: If a message is left, listen to it. If it’s legitimate, you can call back. If it’s spam, you’ve lost nothing. Research the Number (If They Leave a Voicemail): If a voicemail is left and the number is provided, a quick Google search can often reveal if it's a known spam number, a telemarketer, or a legitimate business. There are also apps and websites dedicated to identifying unknown callers. Block the Number: If it’s clearly spam or an unwanted call, don’t hesitate to block the number on your phone. Most smartphones have this feature built-in. While spammers often cycle through numbers, blocking helps reduce calls from that specific one. Use Call Screening Apps: Many carriers or third-party apps (like Nomorobo, Truecaller, Hiya) offer call screening features that can identify and block known spam calls before they even ring. I find these super helpful! Never Give Out Personal Information: If you do accidentally answer, and the caller asks for personal details (bank account, social security number, passwords), hang up immediately. Legitimate organizations won't ask for sensitive information over an unsolicited call. Consider Your Own Habits: If you're expecting a call from someone new (e.g., a plumber, a job interviewer), keep that in mind. Sometimes, they might call from an unfamiliar number. Ultimately, protecting your peace of mind and personal information is key. While it's tempting to answer every call, being smart about unknown numbers can save you a lot of hassle.
