As a huge fan of Subway's Hotshot Italiano, I often found myself craving that distinct spicy, savory flavor. But, let's be real, going out for one every time wasn't practical for my wallet or my schedule! So, I embarked on a mission to crack the code and create my very own copycat version right in my kitchen. And let me tell you, it was a delicious journey! The magic of the Hotshot Italiano truly lies in its ingredient harmony. For the meats, I found that using quality deli-sliced Old World Genoa Salami and Pepperoni, much like the "Private Selection" brands I often grab, really makes a difference. The rich, slightly spicy notes from these cured meats are absolutely essential. Don't skimp on the Sargento Provolone Sliced Provolone Cheese either; its creamy, mild flavor perfectly balances the bold meats and melts beautifully, creating that satisfying pull. Now, for the zing! The combination of tangy Mt. Olive Mild Banana Pepper Rings and the gentle heat of Mezzetta Deli-Sliced Tamed Jalapeno Peppers is what gives this sub its signature 'hotshot' kick. If you're feeling adventurous and love more heat, you can always add a few extra slices of jalapeño or even a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. For the fresh elements, crisp iceberg lettuce and a juicy, ripe red tomato are non-negotiable. They add a refreshing crunch and a burst of garden-fresh flavor that cuts through the richness. My secret to perfecting the assembly is all about the layering and the toasting. After pre-heating your oven to 375°F and giving your Italian herb sub bread a quick warm, I layer the meats and then the provolone. Popping it back in the oven until the cheese is gloriously melted and the bread is lightly toasted makes all the difference. It warms the meats and melds the flavors, almost like a mini panini! After that, it's all about piling on the fresh toppings – lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, and jalapeños. A generous drizzle of oil and vinegar, plus a squirt of classic French's Classic Yellow Mustard for that authentic Subway tang, finishes it off perfectly. A dash of salt and pepper ties everything together. What I love most about making my own Hotshot Italiano at home is the ability to customize it exactly to my liking. Want extra cheese? Go for it! Prefer more banana peppers than jalapeños? You're the chef! Plus, it's incredibly satisfying to recreate a beloved fast-food favorite with fresh ingredients, often saving money in the process. Give this recipe a try; I promise you won't be disappointed by this simple, fast, and incredibly tasty homemade treat!
