As a cat parent, I'm always on the lookout for fun and engaging ways to keep my feline friends mentally and physically stimulated. Since we're all about being frugal and using what we have, here are some other fantastic and cheap cat enrichment ideas I've tried that you can do right at home: 1. Expand on the Empty Box Fun: Don't just stop at one box! You can create a whole fort or maze. Use several empty boxes, some tape, and your trusty scissors to connect them, cutting out entrance and exit holes. You can even use an x-acto knife (carefully!) for more precise doorways. Hide treats or small toys inside for a treasure hunt. My cats love darting through tunnels and pouncing from unexpected corners. It's like their own personal adventure playground, and it costs nothing! 2. Simple DIY Puzzle Feeders: Building on the idea of cutting out circles, you can easily make puzzle feeders. Grab an empty toilet paper roll or a small cereal box. Draw and cut out a few holes large enough for kibble or small treats to fall through when nudged. Place some treats inside, close it up, and let your cat figure out how to get their reward. It's a fantastic way to engage their problem-solving skills and slow down their eating, making mealtime an activity in itself. 3. Homemade Wand Toys & Crinkle Balls: Forget spending a bundle on store-bought ones! A simple stick or even a sturdy pipe cleaner with a feather, a piece of ribbon, or even a crumpled-up piece of wrapping paper tied to the end makes an instant wand toy. For crinkle balls, just tightly crumple up some clean paper (like tissue paper or even a grocery bag) into a ball. The sound drives my cats wild! Just remember to supervise playtime with string or small objects to ensure safety. 4. Vertical Space Exploration: Cats love to climb and observe their territory from a high vantage point. If you have sturdy shelves, clear a space for them. Even a simple, secure cat hammock or a bed placed on a bookcase can provide that valuable vertical real estate. My cats love to survey their domain from their favorite window perch, watching the world go by. 5. Scent Enrichment: Cats have an incredible sense of smell. Sprinkle a little catnip on a scratching post or a blanket for a burst of excitement. You can also introduce other safe scents like silvervine or even a fresh sprig of basil or mint (if your cat shows interest). Always ensure any plants or herbs are safe for pets before introducing them. The key is variety and observation. What one cat loves, another might ignore.
