Setting up sterile field & Donning sterile gloves

2025/6/11 Edited to

... Read moreSetting up a sterile field is crucial in medical and nursing procedures to prevent infections. First, assess the work area for cleanliness and ensure it is dry, preferably on a waist-high surface for easy access to supplies. Gather all necessary sterile items including gloves, drapes, and solutions. Open the sterile drape carefully, avoiding contact with its inner surface, and ensure no contamination occurs during setup. Pouring sterile liquids requires careful attention to avoid splashes; ensure to hold the container appropriately while pouring from a height of about 6 inches to maintain sterility. When applying sterile gloves, check the expiration date first. The dominant hand is dressed first; do so by grasping the glove by the cuff's outer edge, and then slide it over the hand, ensuring fingers stay inside. Avoid any contact between gloved and bare skin throughout the procedure to maintain a sterile environment. These steps ultimately contribute to successful sterile techniques in patient care.

An NCLEX scenario question asks which nurse action appropriately maintains a sterile field during Foley catheter insertion. Options include adjusting gloves after touching a bedside table, turning one's back, keeping hands above waist level, or reaching over the field.
This image provides the rationale for the NCLEX scenario, explaining that touching non-sterile surfaces, turning one's back, or reaching over a sterile field breaks sterility, while keeping hands above waist level maintains it.
An NCLEX scenario question asks which nurse action maintains sterility when preparing a sterile field for a central line dressing change. The correct answer, highlighted, states that dropping contents onto the sterile field from 6 inches above maintains sterility.
