ducks love fresh water

When I first got my ducks, I was surprised by how much time they spent in their water, even when they had plenty of space in their outdoor enclosure. I’d set up a simple blue kiddie pool, and it quickly became their favorite spot! It wasn't long before I realized it's not just for fun; water is absolutely essential for their well-being. One of the first things I learned is that ducks need water to help them eat. Unlike chickens, ducks don't have a crop to store food dry. They need to 'wash down' their feed, like the 'scratch n more' chicken feed and goat pellets I give them. Without enough water nearby, they can actually struggle to swallow their food, which can lead to choking or impaction. I always make sure there's a water source right next to where I scatter their feed. Ever wondered how ducks stay so perfectly waterproof? It's all about their preen gland and access to water! Ducks secrete an oil from a gland near their tail, which they then spread over their feathers using their bill. This oil, combined with proper preening in water, creates that amazing waterproof barrier. If they can't get into water to properly preen, their feathers can become matted and lose their waterproofing, leaving them vulnerable to cold and dampness. My mallard and brown duck spend ages meticulously cleaning themselves in their pool – it's fascinating to watch! Just like any other living creature, ducks need to stay hydrated. Especially on warmer days, or if they're in an outdoor enclosure with dry vegetation nearby, access to plenty of fresh water is crucial. Dehydration can quickly lead to health issues. A constant supply of clean, fresh water helps them regulate body temperature, aids in kidney function, and keeps their entire system running smoothly. I make sure to refresh their water daily, sometimes even twice, especially when it gets muddy from all their splashing and digging. For ducklings, water access is even more delicate. They need shallow dishes where they can submerge their bills to clear their nostrils and eyes, but not so deep that they can drown or get chilled easily. I started with very shallow pans for them, gradually increasing the depth as they grew. It's a fine balance to ensure they can drink and clean themselves safely. Beyond the practical needs, watching my ducks splash and play in their blue kiddie pool is pure joy. It's clear they love the water, and it provides immense mental and physical enrichment. A happy duck is a healthy duck, and providing them with adequate water access is one of the easiest ways to ensure their well-being. It definitely contributes to them being 'plump n healthy' and hopefully, lots of duck eggs soon!
