If the 'secret student' didn't meet the expectations, I don't reveal who it was. Instead, I simply say something like, 'Our secret student had a tough day, but we'll try again tomorrow!' This keeps the focus positive and avoids public embarrassment. Why does this work so well, especially for elementary teachers? Positive Peer Pressure: Students aren't just motivated by personal reward; they want their classmates to succeed so the whole group benefits. This fosters a strong sense of community and teamwork. Self-Monitoring: Since no one knows who the secret student is, every student has to assume it could be them. This encourages all students to regulate their own behavior throughout the day, constantly striving to be their best. It teaches them responsibility and self-awareness.
