Testing beauty products

... Read moreAfter my latest beauty unboxing, it really got me thinking about how we choose what products to buy and where to get them. With so many options, especially if you're a beginner or seeking high-end quality, knowing how to evaluate is key to finding your next holy grail! Let's dive into factors I consider when assessing retailers and products, focusing on staples like setting sprays, powders, and foundations. Evaluating Where to Buy Beauty Products: Retailer Reputation & Authenticity: For high-end brands, I always stick to official brand websites or authorized retailers (like Sephora, Ulta, trusted department stores). This ensures you get genuine products, which is crucial for sensitive skin or when investing a lot. For beginners, these established stores offer a safe space to explore, with transparent policies. Customer Service & Return Policies: A good return policy is non-negotiable. What if that foundation shade is wrong, or a new setting spray irritates your skin? Reputable retailers make the buying experience less risky, which is super comforting. Accessibility & Experience: Do you prefer to swatch shades in person (like a new eyeshadow palette or lip product)? Then a physical store is ideal. If you're restocking or know exactly what you want, online stores offer convenience and often better deals. For beginners, in-store help for shade matching foundation or finding easy-to-use products is invaluable. Key Evaluation Factors for Specific Products: A. Setting Spray & Powder: These are essential for a long-lasting look! Formula & Finish: Do you want matte for oil control, or dewy for hydration? Is it suitable for your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive)? I always check for non-comedogenic formulas. Performance & Claims: Does it promise extended wear, pore-blurring, or oil control? Look for user reviews and ingredient lists that support these claims. Ingredients: For sensitive skin, I avoid alcohol. For oil control, I look for ingredients like silica. Ease of Use: A fine mist for setting spray and a non-cakey powder application are crucial, especially for beginners. B. Foundation: Often the trickiest, but most impactful product! Shade Matching: This is paramount. Always try to test shades in natural light if possible. Virtual try-on tools are improving, but in-person matching at a store is still the best. Coverage & Finish: Do you prefer sheer, medium, or full? Natural, matte, or dewy? Your skin type and desired look will guide this. Skin Type Compatibility: Is it formulated for oily, dry, combination, or sensitive skin? Ensure it won't exacerbate concerns. Ingredients & Benefits: Does it include SPF, hydrating agents, or other skincare benefits? For those prioritizing ingredient quality, this is a bonus. Application: How easily does it blend? Does it work well with your preferred applicator? Ultimately, whether you're discovering new packaged beauty products in an IPSY box (like a fun pink stick product or a new mascara) or specifically shopping for a foundation, informed choices make all the difference. Knowing what to look for and where to trust your purchases ensures you invest in products that truly work for you and your unique beauty routine!
