... Read moreYou know, sometimes I just sit back and marvel at the sheer beauty and diversity within our community. It makes me think about all the amazing things that make us unique, especially when I see images celebrating 'our lips'. It’s not just one look, is it? From fuller, pillowy lips to more slender shapes, and every single shade of melanin-rich color in between – pinks, browns, purples... it’s all so stunning. I remember growing up, there was often a narrow idea of what was considered 'beautiful' for lips, and for a long time, I didn't always see my own lips reflected in mainstream media. But looking at collages that highlight 'our lipss' now, with all their different shades, textures, and natural glosses, fills me with so much pride.
It’s more than just aesthetics; there’s a whole history and cultural significance tied to Black lips. For centuries, our features, including our lips, were unfortunately mocked or caricatured. But thankfully, we’re in a time where we're reclaiming and celebrating these 'unique features'. I've personally found so much joy in seeing how artists and content creators showcase the beauty of our diverse lip shapes and colors, making sure everyone sees themselves represented. It's a powerful statement of self-love and acceptance.
Beyond the visual appeal, taking care of our lips is super important, too. I’ve learned that hydration is key, especially when you want that natural gloss to truly shine. I always keep a good lip balm handy, and in the colder months, I layer it with a protective oil. Exfoliating gently once a week can also help keep them smooth and vibrant, ready for whatever look you’re going for. And speaking of looks, the way lip products play on our skin tones is just incredible. Finding the perfect nude or a bold red that complements our 'golden hour looks on us' skin can really elevate a whole outfit.
For me, makeup for lips is all about enhancing what's already there. I love experimenting with different lip liners to define my shape before going in with a lipstick or a slick of gloss. Sometimes, a simple clear gloss is all you need to highlight the natural texture and shade. But other times, a vibrant berry or a deep brown can feel incredibly empowering. It’s about personal expression, just like how we express ourselves through our 'hair, hair, hairr' – whether it's intricate braids, flowing dreadlocks, or a glorious afro. Each choice is a celebration of who we are.
Ultimately, embracing the beauty of Black lips, in all their forms, is a part of embracing our full selves. It's a reminder that beauty comes in an infinite array of forms, and ours is truly special. I hope we continue to uplift and celebrate every aspect of our 'unique features', knowing that 'Black is beautiful' in every single detail, from our lips to our hair, and everything in between.
And our melanin the way it be shining with or without sun ❤️
