John 5:40

It’s such a simple yet profound statement from Jesus. I found myself wondering, why would anyone refuse life, especially eternal life? The OCR content from the image really clarifies this passage for me, showing how Jesus was explaining that people were diligently "searching the scriptures" yet missing the point that those very scriptures "bear witness about who He is". It made me reflect on my own journey. Have I ever been so focused on understanding religious texts or rules that I missed the living person behind them? Jesus was speaking to people who were experts in the Old Testament, believing that by studying it, they would "have eternal life." But He pointed out their fundamental error: "yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life." It’s a powerful reminder that head knowledge, while good, isn't enough without a heart connection to Jesus Himself. The idea of a "new identity in Christ" truly comes alive here. When we actually come to Jesus, we’re not just getting some abstract concept of "eternal life"; we're entering into a relationship that redefines "what God says about me." Suddenly, my worth isn't based on my ability to understand every verse or follow every rule perfectly. Instead, it’s rooted in His unconditional love and the life He offers. My old identity, striving for glory from people or trying to earn my way, starts to fade. I realize the "glory that comes from the only God" is what truly satisfies. Sometimes people ask, "how Jesus looks like?" And while the Bible doesn't give us a physical description in great detail, this passage reveals His character so clearly. He looks like someone who patiently explains truth, who offers life freely, and who is the very fulfillment of everything the "Old Testament bear witness about." He's not intimidating or exclusive; He's inviting, saying, "come to me that you may have life." It shows His deep desire for us to experience true, abundant life, not just for a fleeting moment, but eternally. The OCR also highlighted how Jesus mentioned, "you do not have the love of God within." This really hits home. If we genuinely loved God, wouldn't we eagerly run to the one He sent, the one who brings us life? The refusal to come to Jesus, then, isn't just a rejection of Him, but perhaps a deeper rejection of the love of God. It's a sobering thought that we can be so close to the source of life, "searching the scriptures" for it, and yet "refuse" to accept it because of pride or a desire for our own glory. For anyone feeling like they're endlessly searching or trying to earn something spiritual, John 5:40 is an invitation. Stop just reading about life and actually "come to Jesus" for it. It's where you truly find "eternal life," your "new identity in Christ," and understand "what God says about you" – that you are deeply loved and offered a life beyond anything you could imagine. This verse constantly reminds me to prioritize that intimate relationship over mere religious activity.
