PROS AND CONS OF BEING A RESPIRATORY THERAPIST ✨

I love what I do! Anyone in healthcare will tell you that dealing with the public (usually at their worst) can be very challenging but it can also be so rewarding. We get to see a lot people pull through and make it to see another day. We get to see medical miracles on the regular. I definitely would recommend my job to someone who wants to work in the medical field but doesn’t think a nursing position is their calling. Please feel free to reach out with any questions! 🫶🏻🥰

... Read moreSince sharing my initial thoughts, I've had so many questions about what being a Respiratory Therapist really involves, especially beyond the basics. It's true, we're often the unsung heroes in critical moments, and I want to dive a little deeper into both the incredible highs and the very real challenges of this role. One of the biggest 'pros' that I absolutely love is how essential we are in critical care. When a patient is struggling to breathe, whether it's from pneumonia, COPD exacerbation, or a traumatic injury, we're right there. We manage ventilators, provide life-saving oxygen therapy, and perform procedures like intubations and tracheostomy care. There's an immense satisfaction in seeing someone literally breathe easier because of your direct intervention. Knowing you're a vital part of the team keeping someone alive is a powerful motivator. And yes, the job security is a huge plus – respiratory therapists are consistently in demand across hospitals, clinics, and even home care settings, which brings a certain peace of mind about career stability. The pay is also quite comparable to many other allied health professions, reflecting the specialized skills and critical thinking we bring to the table. But let's be real, it's not all smooth sailing. The 'cons' can be tough. Long shifts, sometimes 12 hours or even more, are standard, and they can be physically and emotionally draining. You're constantly on your feet, making quick decisions under pressure, and often dealing with emergencies. Dealing with challenging patients, and their families, often when they're at their most vulnerable, scared, or frustrated, requires a significant amount of patience, empathy, and strong communication skills. It's not uncommon to be sworn at or emotionally challenged, which can take a toll. And, of course, exposure to illnesses is a constant reality. We're on the absolute front lines, especially with respiratory viruses, making strict adherence to protocols and diligent use of personal protective equipment not just a recommendation, but a necessity for our own safety and that of our loved ones. A huge part of our advanced practice, which often sparks a lot of curiosity, is working with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, or ECMO. It's essentially a sophisticated life support system that takes over the work of the lungs (and sometimes the heart) for critically ill patients whose own organs can no longer cope. Being part of an ECMO team is incredibly intense but profoundly rewarding. I still vividly remember the first time I was involved in transporting a patient on ECMO; it's a delicate dance of teamwork, precision, and unwavering hope. As an ECMO specialist, you're not just monitoring, you're making real-time adjustments to ensure the circuit runs perfectly, constantly assessing the patient's response. It's a role that demands sharp critical thinking, advanced physiological understanding, and offers the chance to make a monumental difference in someone's fight for life. Naturally, this high level of specialization and responsibility can also lead to higher salaries, reflecting the advanced skills and immense commitment involved in these critical roles. If you're looking for a healthcare career that's hands-on, constantly evolving, and offers tangible impact, where you literally help people take that crucial next breath, respiratory therapy is definitely worth exploring. It's not always easy, but those moments of connection and impact? Those are truly priceless and make every challenging day worthwhile.
