Little Prince

“The Little Prince” is a story that has touched countless hearts, renowned for its deeply meaningful plots and profound lessons about life, love, and loss. As an artist, I've often found myself reflecting on how such powerful narratives can inspire new creations. When I began sketching my own “Little Prince” character, my aim wasn't to illustrate the classic book, but to capture the essence of those bittersweet, “hurt no comfort” feelings that resonate so strongly in stories of deep connection and eventual separation. Creating an original character that embodies such complex “plots” is a journey in itself. My sketchbook pages are filled with rough pencil sketches, exploring different expressions and features. I wanted my character to hint at a story, even in a single glance. You might notice decisions like a wide, unsettling smile and sharp teeth, or pointed features—these aren't just random artistic choices. They're my way of visually representing the internal struggles and the often-uncomfortable truths that can be found in truly meaningful narratives. It’s about conveying a character who might project one thing, but whose deeper story is far more intricate and perhaps a little dark. I find that using strong visual contrasts, like black ink and yellow highlighted drawing, helps to emphasize these dualities. The yellow, often associated with happiness, here serves to highlight the unsettling aspects, drawing attention to the tension within the character's “plot.” It's a way to make the viewer pause and wonder, “What's their story?” just as one might ponder the deeper meanings in “The Little Prince.” Every detail, from a thoughtful pose to the subtle hint of a 'bad attitude' captured in a quick sketch or collage element, contributes to building a character that feels real and lived-in. Even the choice to show multiple versions of the character, from a full-body figure in a suit to a simple headshot, is about hinting at different 'chapters' or facets of their emotional journey. It’s a visual shorthand for the kind of emotional complexity you find in stories where characters navigate profound challenges. For me, the joy of art lies in taking these profound, meaningful 'plots'—whether from cherished books or personal experiences—and translating them into something visually compelling. It's a way to process and share those feelings, like the 'hurt no comfort' sentiment, inviting others to connect with the art on a deeper, emotional level.
