Things I have learned so far as a college student.
These are things I’ve learned for me personally, but I know others can relate to these too! #Lemon8Diary #college #collegelifestyle #collegestudent #lessonslearned #firstyearcollegestudent #newtolemon8
Beyond the initial excitement of college, I quickly realized it wasn't just about classes; it was a crash course in adulting and self-discovery. One of the biggest 'aha!' moments for me was understanding that making friends for me personally was a lot harder than I thought. It wasn't like high school where everyone knew each other. Here, you really have to put yourself out there, join clubs, or just strike up conversations. I learned the importance of quality over quantity and that true connections take time. It taught me to be patient and authentic, rather than trying to fit into every social group. Ironically, making myself study was a lot easier than expected, and definitely helped me a lot in the end. I found that without parents constantly checking in, the motivation had to come from within. I discovered my own best study methods – for me, that meant finding quiet spots in the library and breaking down tasks into smaller chunks. This self-discipline was a huge personal win, proving I could manage my own academic success. Of course, being away from my family has been really hard. The homesickness hit me harder than I anticipated, especially during tough weeks. I learned to lean on my new support system, call home regularly, and create new routines that made my dorm feel more like home. It taught me immense independence and resilience, showing me I could stand on my own two feet. Another crucial lesson was about setting boundaries. I learned to recognize when something didn't feel right and that not participating if uncomfortable was not only okay but essential for my well-being. This could be anything from a social gathering that felt off to a group project where my ideas weren't respected. It taught me to trust my gut and prioritize my mental peace. You quickly realize that not everyone is going to be your cup of tea, and you might not be theirs, but that's okay! This realization freed me from the pressure of trying to please everyone. It's about finding your tribe and respecting differences, not forcing connections. I also discovered how vital time management is. With so much freedom, it's easy to lose track. I started using a planner and breaking down my week, dedicating specific times for academics, social activities, and crucially, self-care. This helped me avoid burnout and enjoy my college experience more holistically. I also learned to embrace new interests; college offers so many opportunities to try new things, from intramural sports to volunteering, which broadened my horizons and helped me meet even more diverse people. These experiences truly shaped me, far beyond textbooks, and I'm still learning every day.
