My partner and I recently had a 'Date Night Clay Crafties' session, and it was seriously such a blast. We wanted to try something different, and working with clay turned out to be the perfect, relaxing activity for us to do together. If you've never done anything like this before, don't worry – we're definitely beginners ourselves! That's the beauty of air-dry clay; it's so forgiving and accessible. All you really need is some air-dry clay (we picked ours up online!), a few basic sculpting tools (even toothpicks work!), and a reference photo to inspire your creations. We scrolled through Pinterest and found some adorable pictures of clay animals – think cute mice, little ducks, and charming cats – which gave us a great starting point. For our clay date, we decided to challenge ourselves by trying to recreate some of our favorite animal figures. It was so much fun seeing how our interpretations differed! Like, for the little clay mice, we started with a basic teardrop shape for the body, then added tiny balls for ears and a thin coil for the tail. For the ducks, it was similar – an oval body, a small head, and a flattened beak. And the cats? Well, those were a bit trickier, but we focused on getting the basic shape and then etching in eyes and whiskers. The key was not to aim for perfection, but to enjoy the process of molding and shaping the clay. We even had a good laugh comparing our 'Mine' vs 'HIS' versions – his creations always seem to have this quirky charm that mine sometimes lack, haha! One of the best tips I can give for a beginner clay date is to pick simple shapes or animals. Think about easy clay references like a tiny snail, a fish, or even abstract shapes if animals feel too daunting. Air-dry clay also means no oven needed, so you can just leave your masterpieces to dry and admire them later. We're planning to paint ours once they're fully dry! Beyond just making cute animals, a clay date is fantastic for couples because it's a no-pressure way to spend quality time. You're both focused on a shared activity, chatting, laughing, and just creating something together. It's a wonderful break from screen time and a chance to tap into your inner artist.
