RIP Sly Stone

Born in Denton, Texas in 1943, Sly found his voice in the Bay Area, later forming the groundbreaking band Sly & the Family Stone in the mid‑1960s—a band notable not only for its addictive funk and soulful sound, but for its vibrant crew of Black and white men and women. They embodied unity and revolution in both sound and spirit.

• Hits like “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” “Stand!,” and “Family Affair” became anthems for social change and togetherness. 
• Their albums—Stand! and There’s a Riot Goin’ On—blended funk, soul, rock, and psychedelia into something wholly new. James Brown laid the groundwork, but as AllMusic notes, “Sly Stone perfected funk.” 
• Their electrifying 1969 Woodstock performance was a high point of the era.
