Free stuff for kids was so exciting

📚 FREE STUFF FOR KIDS: The Original Thrill of False Hope 🎉

If you were a kid in the 80s or 90s, you know exactly what I’m talking about…

That little black-and-white, low-budget-looking book with the bold promise:

“FREE STUFF FOR KIDS!!”

(Emphasis on “FREE” because we had zero money and 100% enthusiasm.)

You’d find it in the back of your school library or maybe in a dusty bin at the book fair, right next to a Garfield comic or Where’s Waldo. And once you cracked it open—it was game on.

Inside? Page after page of magical-sounding offers like:

• “Get a FREE NASA SPACE PATCH!” (if you mailed in a SASE and your soul)

• “Send a postcard to a toothpaste company and get a sticker of a smiling molar.”

• “Receive a grab bag of used pencils and erasers from a mystery school in Idaho!”

• “Send 2 box tops and a letter to the U.S. Treasury and they’ll mail you shredded money in a bag!” (Weird flex, but okay.)

Most of it turned out to be absolute junk—cheap plastic rulers, postcards of squirrels, bookmarks that doubled as math tables—but did we care? Nope.

We were 9 years old, riding high on the dream that the mailman might bring us treasure.

You had to write letters (by hand!), address an envelope, find a stamp (which involved begging your mom), and hope and pray it arrived. Weeks later, something would show up… maybe. It was like Amazon Prime if Prime took 6-8 weeks and delivered disappointment wrapped in joy.

Still, there was something beautiful about it. The hope. The anticipation. The idea that somewhere out there, a cereal company was just dying to send you a bookmark shaped like a banana.

Long live the era of junk mail joy, cheap prizes, and the pure, unfiltered optimism of being a kid with a book full of “free stuff.”

Now excuse me while I go check the mailbox for my glow-in-the-dark shoe laces. ✉️👟✨

... Read moreThat trip down memory lane, remembering the sheer delight of those 'Free Stuff for Kids' books, really gets me thinking about what made it all so magical, even when the actual freebies were, well, mostly junk! It wasn't just about the item; it was the whole adventure. The cover promised 'OVER 250 FUN THINGS INSIDE,' and our imaginations did the rest. I remember pouring over those pages, circling the 'fun goodies' I absolutely had to have. Each entry felt like a secret mission: find the company, write the letter, address the envelope, then the ultimate challenge—finding a stamp and getting it mailed! The waiting was excruciating, but also half the fun. Every time the mail truck rumbled down the street, my heart would pound. Would today be the day my glow-in-the-dark shoelaces arrived? Or maybe that weird, shredded money from the U.S. Treasury? It was like a real-life treasure hunt, powered by snail mail and boundless childhood optimism. While we might not be sending away for smiling molar stickers via post anymore, the spirit of seeking out 'fun free stuff' is definitely alive and well! It's just evolved. Think about it: today's kids (and savvy adults!) can still find amazing freebies, just through different channels. For example, many museums offer free admission days, or local libraries have incredible free programs, workshops, and even passes to other attractions. These are fantastic ways to get 'free project material' and experiences that spark creativity and learning. Online, the landscape for fun free stuff is vast. There are countless educational apps that offer free versions, websites with free printable crafts and activity sheets, and even companies that offer product samples just for signing up for their newsletters. For gamers, many popular titles offer free-to-play options or limited-time free downloads. It’s a different kind of anticipation, perhaps, but the joy of getting something cool without spending a dime is timeless. Even in the physical world, keep your eyes peeled! Many stores offer birthday clubs for kids that send out coupons for free treats or small toys. Local community events, festivals, and fairs often have free activities, entertainment, and sometimes even small giveaways. The key is to be a little proactive, just like we were with those old mail-order forms. Instead of a SASE, now it might be a newsletter signup or a quick search online for 'free events near me.' So, while my childhood mail-order adventures might be a thing of the past, the thrill of discovering 'fun free stuff' certainly isn't. It's just taken on new forms, offering a fresh generation (and us nostalgic adults!) the chance to experience that little burst of joy and surprise. Who knows what free treasure you might discover today?
