Half-day Badlands Itinerary!

Half-day Badlands National Park Itinerary for when you’re short on time or just want the highlights!!

📍First you can stop at the Badlands Ranch Store and feed prairie dogs! Just look for the giant prairie dog statue, you can’t miss it! They are seriously the cutest.

📍For some of the best views of the park, stop at Big badlands Overlook.

📍One of the best hikes (in my opinion) is Notch Trail, that is where you will find the famous ladder! It’s actually part of the trail and you use it to continue on the path. It can get really busy and backed up though so I recommend going early in the morning! (Plus this helps you beat the heat).

📍Make sure to keep an eye out for animals too, they’re everywhere if you look hard enough!

📍Finally, make sure you take a drive through the entire length of the park and take it all in. It’s a super fun road with lots of twists, turns, and breathtaking views.

While a half-day visit can certainly cover the main highlights, as shared in my itinerary, let's dive deeper into how you can tailor your trip based on the time you have. For those who are truly short on time, perhaps just passing through South Dakota, my half-day guide is perfect. You can efficiently hit key spots that truly capture the essence of the park. Kicking off at the Badlands Ranch Store to feed prairie dogs (look for that giant prairie dog statue, you seriously can't miss it!) is an absolute must for some adorable wildlife interaction. Then, heading to Big Badlands Overlook provides those iconic, sweeping vistas that make the park famous. And of course, tackling the Notch Trail, with its thrilling ladder section, is an unforgettable adventure that gives you a unique perspective of the rugged landscape. Even in a few hours, you can drive through the park for some fun roads and more amazing overlooks, constantly keeping an eye out for all the wildlife around the park. If you find yourself with a full day, you can significantly deepen your Badlands experience. With extra hours, you can explore more hiking trails beyond just the Notch Trail. Consider adding the Door Trail for an easy walk into the badlands formations, or the Fossil Exhibit Trail, which is an accessible boardwalk perfect for learning about the park’s prehistoric past. You’ll have ample time to visit the Ben Reifel Visitor Center for exhibits and ranger programs, and stop at several more scenic overlooks like Pinnacles or Yellow Mounds, allowing for more leisurely photography and wildlife spotting. A full day also means you can experience both sunrise and sunset, which are truly magical in the Badlands, painting the landscape in incredible hues. For the truly dedicated explorer with two days or more, Badlands National Park becomes an immersive adventure. You could spend a day exploring the popular North Unit, as outlined, and dedicate another day to the more remote Sage Creek Rim Road in the park's South Unit.
