Perfect excuse to start a new mystery series!

A small island with big lies…Welcome to Rockfish Island.

Philip Russell, a U.S. Park Ranger for a small island in the Pacific Northwest has stumbled across a dead body in the woods. Unsure if the dead woman is a local or someone from the mainland, the new female sheriff is called in to find out if the community has anything to fear. Eager to help solve the mystery, both instantly find themselves at odds with each other. Philip, defending the people he’s known his whole life, and Sheriff Lane, giving no one the benefit of the doubt,…not even Philip. Together the investigation progresses and both quickly realize that on this sleepy island not everyone is who they pretend to be…and possibly, one of them is a killer.

... Read moreReading about Rockfish Island’s dark secrets instantly reminded me of some of the best mystery series I've enjoyed, where isolated settings amplify tension and deepen intrigue. The Pacific Northwest backdrop adds a unique atmosphere—the dense woods, often shrouded in mist, create the perfect eerie environment for a suspenseful story. One element I find compelling in mysteries like this is the clash between local insiders and newcomers, represented here by Philip Russell, the lifelong resident and park ranger, and Sheriff Lane, the new female sheriff with a skeptical eye. This kind of dynamic brings realism to the narrative, as it highlights how trust is earned and lost in tight-knit communities when secrets begin to surface. From personal experience, investigations in small communities often uncover unexpected layers of hidden relationships and motives, which makes the development of suspicion spreading among inhabitants very believable. The tension between defending long-time friends and pursuing justice creates a fascinating moral dilemma for characters, enhancing the narrative’s emotional depth. Additionally, the mention of “big lies” signals strong psychological suspense and implies that the story will explore themes of identity and deception—common but effective tropes in crime fiction that keep readers guessing. This makes it an excellent introduction to a mystery series, as the initial case sets a tone of uncertainty and intrigue that beckons readers to follow further installments. For readers who appreciate a blend of well-developed characters, a vividly described natural setting, and complex plot twists, this story promises a thrilling ride. It’s the kind of mystery that encourages you to question every character’s motives while immersing you in the atmospheric isolation of Rockfish Island. Finally, I also appreciate that the author hints at the possibility that anyone can be the killer, a classic yet always engaging approach that creates suspense and invites readers to piece together clues alongside the protagonists.
