... Read moreHey fellow wave riders! If you're anything like me, you've probably felt that irresistible pull of the ocean, especially growing up on the East Coast. For years, I've been dipping my toes (and boards!) in, but lately, I've had a big realization: I need a longboard! Seriously, it's moved from a 'want' to a 'need' as I've been dreaming of smoother glides and catching every ripple our Atlantic shores offer. Why a Longboard for East Coast Waves? Our East Coast breaks, while amazing, can be quite different from the powerful swells of the Pacific. Often, we get smaller, gentler waves, which is precisely where a longboard shines. I've found that with a longboard, you can paddle into waves much earlier, making it easier to catch them – especially those playful, less aggressive ones. They offer incredible stability, which is fantastic for cruising, cross-stepping, and just generally enjoying a longer, more relaxed ride. It’s not just about catching more waves; it’s about savoring each moment on the water, making it perfect for both beginners and seasoned surfers looking for a different kind of stoke. For anyone wondering about the equipment needed for surfing on the East Coast, a longboard is definitely high on my list now! Beyond the Board: My Essential Surf Gear Checklist As I embark on this longboard quest, I'm also thinking about all the surf essentials that truly make a session great. It's not just about the board; it's about being prepared and comfortable. Here’s what’s on my mind: Wetsuit/Rash Guard: Depending on the season, East Coast water temperatures can vary wildly. A good wetsuit is a must for those cooler months, and a rash guard is perfect for sun protection and preventing chafing in the summer. No one wants to cut a session short because they're too cold or uncomfortable! Leash: A reliable leash is non-negotiable. It keeps your board close and prevents it from becoming a runaway projectile, especially in crowded spots. Safety first! Surf Wax: The right wax for the water temperature makes a huge difference in grip. I always check the water temp to ensure I'm using the correct 'base coat' and 'top coat' for optimal traction. Fins: While many longboards come with fins, experimenting with different fin setups can really change the feel of your ride. I'm keen to try a classic single fin for that ultimate glide. Sunscreen & Hat: Even on cloudy days, the sun reflects off the water. High-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen is always in my bag, along with a wide-brimmed hat for those long paddle-outs. My East Coast Surfer Attire & Outfit Ideas Of course, surfer attire goes beyond just the wetsuit! After a refreshing session, I love to slip into something comfy and beach-appropriate. My go-to surfers outfit ideas usually involve: Quick-dry board shorts or swimsuits: Essential for comfort in and out of the water. Loose-fitting linen shirts or quick-dry tees: Perfect for throwing over a swimsuit or rash guard. Hoodies or cozy sweaters: For those cooler evenings or early morning sessions when there's a chill in the air. Comfortable sandals or slip-on shoes: Easy to kick off and on when heading to and from the beach. A trusty surf hat or baseball cap: Keeps the sun out of my eyes and my hair in check. I’m really excited about diving deeper into the East Coast surf scene with my new longboard. There's something truly special about our less-hyped, often more intimate surf spots. If you’re also an East Coast surfer, or thinking of becoming one, let me know your favorite spots and surf essentials! I can't wait to share my first longboard experience with you all!
