... Read moreLiving with a dachshund puppy is truly an experience filled with endless laughter and, yes, a fair share of adorable 'shenanigans'! My little sausage dog, who I happily welcomed into my family (and perhaps found through a wonderful community like Delaware Dachshunds), has a personality bigger than her tiny legs, and she never fails to surprise me with her daily antics. One of her favorite games is 'burrow and hide.' Give her a blanket, a pile of laundry, or even just a soft cushion, and she'll be nose-diving into it, emerging moments later with a triumphant wiggle. It's not just cute; it's instinctual for dachshunds to dig and burrow, a trait rooted in their history as badger hunters. Seeing her happily tunneling away always makes me smile. To manage this playful habit, I've found giving her designated burrowing spots, like a soft dog bed with lots of loose blankets, keeps her happy and my laundry pile (mostly) intact! It's all about providing appropriate outlets for their natural instincts. Then there are the zoomies! Out of nowhere, she'll get this burst of energy, tearing around the house at top speed, skidding on rugs, and doing mid-air turns that would make an acrobat jealous. These bursts of energy are pure joy to watch, though sometimes I have to clear the floor of anything breakable! Making sure she gets enough exercise outside, like short walks and playtime in the yard, really helps channel that energy positively. A tired dachshund is often a well-behaved dachshund, and regular mental stimulation with puzzle toys also helps reduce excessive energy bursts indoors. Toy destruction is another common dachshund 'shenanigan' I've learned to embrace. Squeaky toys, plushies, ropes – no toy is safe for long! While it can be a bit frustrating to constantly replace toys, I've discovered that providing her with durable, puzzle toys and chews keeps her mind engaged and her teeth busy. It's all part of their feisty, determined nature. I've found that rotating her toys helps keep her interested and makes them last a little longer too, saving my wallet a bit! And let's not forget the 'shadow' act. Wherever I go, she's right there, often tripping me up with her incredibly low center of gravity. Whether I'm in the kitchen, working at my desk, or just moving from room to room, she follows, a loyal little shadow. It's her way of being involved in everything, and it's incredibly endearing, even if I sometimes have to be extra careful where I step! This constant companionship is one of the most charming, if sometimes challenging, aspects of owning a dachshund. These dachshund shenanigans aren't just funny; they're a huge part of what makes her such a special companion. Every day is an adventure, and her playful spirit is infectious. While they can be stubborn and full of mischief, their loyalty and affectionate nature more than make up for it. If you're considering bringing a dachshund into your life, be prepared for a dog full of character, energy, and endless love – and yes, lots of adorable mischief! It’s a small price to pay for such a big heart and so many laughs that fill your home.
