Shino (Shino) is the first white ceramic glaze that was born in Japan. Around the middle of the 16th century, it was made of clay-infused feldspar, until it formed a milky-like off-white glaze. It is unique on the surface, often with small perforations or an orange peel-like tactile skin, called Suana () and Yuzuhada ().
In the Momoyama era, Shino-coated matcha brew cups became very popular, mainly with a Hantsutsu-gata () or semi-cylindrical shape; the slightly asymmetrical-looking shape was not a flaw, but the result of the hand dial molding of the time, which became a charm reflecting wabi-sabi (Wabi-Sabi) beauty.
