Then She Was Gone Book Review

⭐️Overall rating: 4/5 ⭐️

It took me a while to get into the book because of the format and style of it. It felt like it was for teens in high school. Also the story was just dragging a bit. I wanted to dislike it at first, maybe I’m just impatient I know they have to build up the backstory and everything before getting to the plot twists and such. But you don’t get any clues until nearly halfway through 😩

Once you got clues tho I thought I had it figured out and then I got more answers and realized I was very wrong and the truth was very unsettling tbf.

The details are also so vivid I feel as tho this was something I saw on the news and Ellie was real and I just feel so sad for her and Laurel. I’ve never been like sad over a book before but this left me very sad 😢. Not crying sad I don’t cry at books but if you are a cryer you might just do that. At least they had a happy-ish ending😭

I would recommend this book it actually was pretty good and glad I got it at the thrift store for just $1 😊 money well spent

... Read moreOkay, so after diving deep into 'Then She Was Gone,' I wanted to share a bit more about why this book, by the brilliant Lisa Jewell, resonated with me and what you might expect if you pick up the paperback edition. If you're searching for a novel that keeps you guessing, this is it! First off, the premise itself is hauntingly simple yet utterly complex: a mother, Laurel, still mourning the disappearance of her teenage daughter, Ellie, ten years prior, suddenly finds herself drawn to a new man and his own young daughter, who bears a striking resemblance to Ellie. What unfolds is a psychological thriller that expertly weaves together past and present, slowly revealing the truth behind Ellie's vanishing. While the original review mentioned a slow start, I feel that's part of Lisa Jewell's genius – she builds the tension so meticulously, making those eventual plot twists hit even harder. It's not a fast-paced action story, but a slow burn that delves into the human psyche and the enduring pain of loss. For those wondering about the 'Then She Was Gone' paperback, it's a fantastic format for this kind of read. I actually snagged my copy at a thrift store, which felt like finding a hidden gem! The paperback is usually quite portable, perfect for throwing in your bag for commutes or a weekend getaway. It also feels good in your hands as you're turning those pages, especially when you can't put it down. The cover art for the edition I read featured those stark bare branches with a hint of pink leaves, which I thought perfectly captured the melancholic yet hopeful undertones of the story – a beautiful contrast that mirrors the content within. It makes you wonder about the symbolism right from the start. If you're contemplating how to read it, besides finding a paperback, 'Then She Was Gone' is widely available as an e-book for your Kindle or other devices, and there’s also a compelling audiobook version. Sometimes, hearing the story unfold can add another layer of immersion, especially with thrillers. If you're not ready to commit to buying, check your local library! Many libraries offer both physical copies and digital loans through apps. What truly stuck with me, and something I wanted to emphasize, is the profound emotional depth. The story isn't just about solving a mystery; it's about grief, resilience, and the desperate search for closure. Lisa Jewell crafts characters like Laurel and Ellie with such vivid detail that you can't help but feel their pain and hope. Even though the original review mentioned feeling sad, I think it's a testament to the powerful storytelling. It’s a sad kind of beautiful, knowing that the journey leads to a 'happy-ish ending' – a realistic and poignant resolution that feels earned. This novel truly proves that sometimes the most impactful stories are the ones that take their time to unfold, leaving you with much to ponder long after you've read the last page. Definitely recommend adding this powerful novel to your reading list!
