Last week we went to see @OurLadyPeace, a Christmas gift from me to my husband. I was excited to go with him, but if I’m being honest, I expected it to be more his experience than mine.
But then they shared the story behind the song “Life”… and it completely shook me.
It was about a pancreatic tumor, the fear, the surgery… and survival.
The same story as mine, 16 years ago.
Standing there, hearing those lyrics…
“life is waiting for you… it’s all messed up but we’re alive…”
I couldn’t stop crying.
Because life was waiting for me on the other side of what I thought was the end 🤍
Attending the OurLadyPeace concert was an unexpected emotional journey for me. Initially, I thought the experience would mainly resonate with my husband, but the story behind their song "Life" struck a chord that felt incredibly personal. It’s rare to find music that tells a story so aligned with your own life experience — in this case, battling pancreatic cancer and the uncertainties that come with it. When the band shared that "Life" was inspired by the struggles with a pancreatic tumor, the fear of surgery, and ultimately, survival, it brought back vivid memories from 16 years ago when I faced a similar battle. Hearing the lyrics "life is waiting for you… it’s all messed up but we’re alive…" live was deeply moving, reminding me that survival isn't just about overcoming illness but embracing the messy, beautiful journey that follows. From my own experience, recovery from pancreatic surgery is daunting, both physically and emotionally. It’s not just the operation but the mental resilience required to adjust to a changed body and celebrate the gift of being alive each day. The song captured that sentiment perfectly — the mix of fear, hope, and gratitude. For anyone facing a serious illness or witnessing a loved one’s health struggles, stories like these can offer unexpected comfort and strength. Music and personal narratives have a unique power to connect people across time and experience. This concert was more than entertainment; it was a reminder that life continues in all its imperfections, and that on the other side of hardship, there is a new beginning worth cherishing. If you ever get the chance to see OurLadyPeace live, especially when they share the stories behind their songs, it could be a profoundly healing experience, as it was for me. It’s a testament to how art can turn pain into hope and foster a deep sense of community among survivors and supporters alike.
