Hey everyone! So glad you're looking for ways to get that perfect summer glow. My original post touched on my basic routine, but I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some of the things I've learned along the way to make sure you're tanning properly and safely. First off, let's talk about preparation. Before you even think about stepping out into the sun, I highly recommend exfoliating your skin. This is a game-changer! Gently scrubbing away dead skin cells creates a smooth canvas for an even tan, helping you avoid those patchy spots. I usually do this the day before, focusing on areas like elbows and knees. Next, about that moisturizing and sunscreen combo: it's absolutely crucial. I always moisturize first, as it helps my skin absorb the sun more evenly, as I mentioned. But the sunscreen is your best friend for preventing burns and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Don't cheap out on SPF! For my first few sessions, I start with a higher SPF, maybe 30, and then might go down to 15 once my skin has a base tan. Remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're sweating or swimming. And yes, even if you want to get color, you still need sunscreen! It's all about tanning *safely*. Now, for the actual tanning session. My article mentioned setting a "15 min timer for each time I need to turn over!" and this is key for me. I find that short, controlled exposure on each side (front, back, and even sides) helps me get an all-over even tan without overdoing it. Avoid being out during peak sun hours, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun's rays are strongest. I usually aim for late morning or late afternoon when "Lookatthesun" is less intense. While you're chilling, don't forget to stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water to keep your skin from drying out. Another tip I swear by is avoiding tan lines. If you're wearing a swimsuit, try to pick one that minimizes straps or change positions frequently to avoid sharp lines. Sometimes I even go for a strapless top for a bit. Finally, after-tanning care is just as important. Once you're done with your session, take a cool shower to rinse off any sunscreen. Then, apply a generous amount of after-sun lotion or a rich moisturizer. This helps to soothe your skin, prevent peeling, and lock in that gorgeous color, making your tan last longer. Aloe vera is fantastic for this! I know we all want that beautiful bronze, but always listen to your body. If your skin starts feeling hot or uncomfortable, it’s time to head inside. Tanning should be a relaxing experience, not a race to get burned. I'm still learning too, and always open to new recommendations! Happy tanning, everyone!
