Vera Stein Is Fine by Julie Murphy

Perhaps it's never too late to play the opening credits...

Welcome to Starlight Palms, a favorite retirement facility among Hollywood actors and industry professionals tucked away just outside of sunny Palm Springs.

This book is an absolute gem of a story! It’s so funny and emotional and relatable - yes I am an elder millennial and immediately felt a connection with Vera. Her inner dialogue and banter was so good. She had been a care taker and had been putting everyone else first for so long and at 40 she really started to ask what she wanted in life.

There is such an amazing cast of side characters in this book who are quirky and lovely - yes this is a feel good book but it doesn’t shy away from grief and loss and healing. It’s ok to be a little messy at 40 and not have it all figured out yet.

... Read moreReading ‚Vera Stein Is Fine‘ truly felt like stepping into a world where healing and rediscovery meet the glimmer of Hollywood charm. The setting of Starlight Palms, a retirement facility for industry veterans, provides a unique backdrop that adds warmth and depth to Vera’s journey. What resonated with me most was how the story explores complex emotions like grief and the courage it takes to start over, especially after dedicating so much time caring for others. Vera’s character struck a chord as she navigates her 40s with all its uncertainties—embracing her flaws and seeking fulfillment on her own terms. The candid inner dialogues and witty banter felt genuine and relatable, making her transformation both believable and inspiring. The author masterfully creates a cast of quirky, lovable side characters that enrich the story and offer a true sense of community. The blend of a Hollywood romance with workplace and forced proximity elements keeps the narrative engaging, while the depiction of multigenerational family drama brings additional layers of emotional depth. I also appreciated the inclusivity, including a plus-size heroine and a compassionate male counterpart. Overall, this book is more than a summer or beach read; it’s a celebration of resilience, love in unexpected places, and the messy yet beautiful process of healing. It reminded me that it’s never too late to rewrite your story and that new beginnings can come with a little spice and a lot of heart.
