SAVORY GIRL SNACK PLATE

I love savory food, sweets have never hit the mark for me, so obviously I had to try the viral sardine plate. I was intimidated, as I’ve always associated sardines as ‘wartime food’, but I’ve become more aware of the tinned fish industry in past months. Simply for slowly dipping my toes in, I tried fishwife brand sardines in oil and preserved lemon. They were delicious… the bones and spinal chords are just not for me, but the taste is delicious and worth a try for sure!

... Read moreAfter raving about my recent sardine plate adventure, I wanted to share more about why I'm obsessed with the 'savory girl snack plate' trend and how you can create your own delicious spread, whether you're a tinned fish aficionado or prefer other savory delights! These plates are perfect for a quick lunch, an easy dinner, or even when hosting friends. First off, while sardines are fantastic, the world of savory snack plates is vast! If you're not ready for tinned fish, or just want variety, here are some other star ingredients. For a super simple option, consider a boiled egg snack plate. Hard-boiled eggs are packed with protein, easy to prepare, and pair wonderfully with a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning, some creamy avocado slices, and a handful of cherry tomatoes. You could also try flavorful cured meats like salami, which adds a lovely salty kick and texture. Don't forget the cheese! I love adding cubes of Parmesan for a sharp, nutty flavor, or crumbling some tangy feta. For a unique twist, I've even enjoyed blueberry goat cheese on my plates – it's surprisingly delicious with savory elements! Now, let's talk about building the perfect plate. Think about a balance of flavors and textures. Protein Power: Beyond sardines and eggs, think about smoked salmon, prosciutto, or even grilled chicken strips for a heartier meal. Creamy Dips & Spreads: A dollop of tzatziki is a game-changer, offering a refreshing contrast. Hummus, baba ghanoush, or a creamy cheese spread also work beautifully. Fresh & Crunchy Veggies: This is where you can really make your plate pop. I always include crisp sliced cucumbers, juicy cherry tomatoes, and briny Kalamata olives. Thinly sliced red onion adds a nice bite, and bell peppers or carrot sticks are great too. Something Briny & Bright: Little additions like capers or fresh dill can elevate the entire plate. Pickles, cornichons, or marinated artichoke hearts are also fantastic for adding that zing. The Carriers: Crusty bread, a variety of crackers, pita bread, or even vegetable sticks are essential for scooping up all those delicious components. The best part about a savory snack plate is its versatility. You can gather whatever you have on hand and arrange it artfully on a platter. Think of it like a mini charcuterie board, but with endless possibilities! It’s all about creating a visually appealing and satisfying spread that caters to your savory cravings. Experiment with different combinations, try new cheeses or tinned fish varieties, and most importantly, have fun with it. It’s my go-to for a no-fuss, delicious meal that feels a little fancy without any effort!
