Growing up, many of us were taught historical stories that seemed perfectly true but were actually myths or exaggerations. From my own experience, questioning these tales can open up a richer understanding of history. For example, the myth that Christopher Columbus "discovered" America often overshadows the fact that indigenous peoples had thrived on the continent for thousands of years. Another favorite myth is George Washington chopping down a cherry tree. This story was invented by a biographer to promote Washington's honesty but isn’t factual. Likewise, Vikings are popularly depicted wearing horned helmets, but this image was crafted in 19th-century operas and has no basis in reality. Stories like Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag or Isaac Newton discovering gravity by sitting under an apple tree are symbolic but historically inaccurate. These narratives tend to simplify complex events into memorable anecdotes but miss the nuanced truth. Benjamin Franklin’s kite experiment is another example. Electricity was already studied centuries before Franklin; his experiment was significant but not an original discovery. Even the Pilgrims' attire has been misrepresented—they wore colorful clothing rather than the stereotypical black-and-white outfits. Finally, the belief that the Great Wall of China is visible from space is a widespread myth. Although impressive and historically significant, the wall’s visibility from orbit is untrue. Reflecting on these myths encourages critical thinking and a more accurate appreciation of history. It also shows how narratives can evolve, shaped by cultural stories rather than facts. For anyone interested in history, looking beyond the surface helps uncover fascinating truths and avoids perpetuating misconceptions.
