We might be juggling a million things, feeling overwhelmed, or just battling a quiet sadness, but "I'm fine" rolls off the tongue so easily. Why is that? I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on this. Part of it, I believe, is societal. We’re taught to be strong, to keep a brave face, and not to "burden" others with our problems. Another part is internal; sometimes, we genuinely don't know how we're feeling, or we're afraid to confront those difficult emotions. We might push them down, hoping they'll just disappear. But, as I've learned, those feelings don't just vanish; they often manifest in other ways, like stress, anxiety, or even physical discomfort. So, how can we move beyond the automatic "I'm fine" and truly answer the question, "How are you feeling today?" with honesty, both to ourselves and to those we trust? It starts with a conscious effort to check in with yourself. One technique I've found incredibly helpful is using an emotional wheel or a mood tracker. You know, those charts with different colors and shades representing various emotions? While not actual "images" in the sense of photos, these visual aids can be powerful. Instead of just "sad," you might discover you’re feeling 'disappointed,' 'lonely,' or 'frustrated.' Seeing these distinctions visually can help articulate what’s going on inside. It gives you a vocabulary for your internal landscape, almost like a map. Another way to explore "How are you feeling today?" when words seem elusive is through journaling. You don't need to write long paragraphs. Sometimes, just jotting down a few keywords, or even doodling, can unlock suppressed feelings. I often find myself drawing abstract shapes or colors that represent my mood before I can even put words to it.
