Am I wrong for blocking my sister after what she did at my engagement party?”

So I got engaged a few months ago. My fiancé and I have been together for almost 4 years. Everything was going great until my engagement party.

My younger sister has always been the type that needs attention on her. Growing up, if I got something, she had to get something too. If I had a birthday dinner, she’d somehow turn it into being about her.

Well at my engagement party, she showed up almost an hour late. Whatever. I didn’t care because I was busy talking to family.

Then halfway through the party she stands up and starts tapping a glass. Everyone gets quiet thinking she’s about to give some cute speech.

Nope.

She announces that she’s pregnant.

The entire room starts cheering. People are hugging her, crying, asking questions, taking pictures. For almost an hour nobody was talking about the engagement anymore.

I was hurt but tried not to make a scene.

Later that night I found out she’d actually known she was pregnant for over a month and had specifically waited to tell everyone at my engagement party because she knew the whole family would be there.

I confronted her the next day and told her it was selfish.

She told me I was being dramatic and that “there’s enough happiness to go around.”

Then my mom got involved and said I should apologize because my sister’s pregnancy is “more important” than an engagement.

That turned into a huge argument.

Now my sister, mom, and a few other relatives have basically stopped talking to me because I blocked my sister after she posted on Facebook that I was jealous of her baby.

My fiancé says I’m justified.

My mom says I’m tearing the family apart.

So… am I wrong?

... Read moreDealing with family dynamics, especially during significant life events like an engagement, can be incredibly challenging. From personal experience, I understand the feeling of being overshadowed by a loved one's unexpected announcement at what was supposed to be your special moment. It's tough when attention shifts, and emotions run high. In many families, siblings often compete for attention, which can sometimes lead to hurt feelings or misunderstandings. The situation becomes even more complicated when one person plans a major announcement, like a pregnancy, so strategically that it diverts the focus away from another's milestone event. Blocking a family member on social media is a big step and usually reflects deeper hurt and frustration. However, it can sometimes be necessary to establish boundaries and protect your mental well-being, especially if the other party publicly accuses you of jealousy or negative intentions, which only fuels tension. When faced with such conflict, open communication remains key. While your sister’s pregnancy is a joyous event, intentionally overshadowing your engagement party feels selfish and inconsiderate. It’s important for families to find ways to celebrate each other's happiness without one diminishing the other's moments. In similar experiences shared by others, mediating conversations with neutral family members or even a counselor can help rebuild fractured relationships. You might also consider explaining how the timing impacted you emotionally, emphasizing that both occasions deserve respect and separate celebration. Ultimately, only you can determine if blocking your sister was the right decision. Listen to your feelings, consider the impact on your family, and remember that setting healthy boundaries can be an act of self-care, not malice.

Nah I’d be upset too because that was supposed to be about you and she made it about her and was being selfish. She could’ve had her own get together and announce it

That was extremely selfish of her because now her baby is gonna be born in a toxic environment without an amazing aunt and I think it’s just so stupid. She could’ve waited one or two days.
