Black Horror Movies
Hey everyone.! (& I do mean EVERYONE, these movies are to be enjoyed by all races) I hope this reaches both the horror loving community & the black community here on Lemon8. Here are some of my favorite Black horror movies with my rating & awards.! I’m making this post around midnight where I live so it’s definitely fitting the mood to talk about some spooky films. So here’s the breakdown-
1. The Blackening- Funniest - 10/10
This is easily one of the funniest horror comedies out today but definitely the top of this list. Full of cultural jokes, references & stereotypes.
A group of friends & graduates from a HBCU gather for a Juneteenth reunion at a cabin in the woods. It’s full of promise of a good time with some good people… until they discover a racist game called “The Blackening” -a black trivia game with some challenging ifykyk type questions. Given the instructions “Play or your friend dies” they begin playing the game to save the life of their friend. Will they save their friend & escape their nightmare.? Watch this hilarious black story on Stars, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video.
2. They Cloned Tyrone- Most Star studded- 10/10
Starring John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, & Jamie Foxx this star studded cast will definitely get you hooked.! Can’t go wrong with a Jamie Foxx movie.
A Dr*g dealer, S*x worker, & a P*mp join forces to uncover the mysterious happenings in their city. Suspicious products targeted towards black people, white men with Afros, and a trap house with an elevator… something is up.! & Did they really clone Tyrone.? Watch this horror/sci-fi movie on Netflix exclusively to get to the bottom of this mystery.
3. The People Under The Stairs- Oldest- 8/10
This is the oldest movie on my list, released in 1991. An oldie but a goodie.!
A robbery gone wrong quickly turns into a horror fest. Newly 13 year old, Fool, finds himself in a messy situation after teaming up with two much older men to commit a robbery. Fool just wants to get the money to keep a roof over his family’s heads but he soon learns this may be a mistake. Because like the title says.. there are people up under them stairs.! Watch this classic horror film on Amazon Prime Video.
4. Get Out - Most Popular - 10/10
If you haven’t heard of Jordan Peele’s Get Out you must be living under a rock because this movie blew up.! Easily the most popular black horror movie on my list.
Chris is taking things to the next level with his girlfriend Rose, he’s going to meet her parents for the first time. Only thing is… Rose & her family are white and he’s reasonably nervous to meet them, will they accept him as a black man.? Well turns out that should be the least of his concern when things start getting weird. What does this family have in store for him.? Idk I think I hear the ancestors telling him to Get Out. Watch this modern black horror movie on Peacock, Hulu or Amazon Prime.
5. His House - Scariest - 9/10
This movie is definitely the scariest on my list with horrifying scenes starting just after the 10 minute mark. This movie will having you screaming “No.! Nope.! Hell nah.!”
A husband and wife, refugees from the war zone that has consumed South Sudan, are released from a refugee detention center and given a home in London with a weekly allowance of 74 pounds (about $94). Quickly this sanctuary turns into a nightmare. After living in a war zone, losing their daughter & moving to a new country they both seem to be struggling with PTSD. But is this just PTSD or a curse.? Be prepared for an unexpected twist in this terrifying film. Watch this African horror movie exclusively on Netflix.
Whew, that was a lot but I’m not done yet. If you’re unable to watch these amazing movies on any of those platforms I have a kinda sketchy alternative for you.
