Retwist and style

Hey everyone! As a loctician, one of the questions I get asked most often is about the dreaded 'retwist' and how to keep your locs looking fresh in between appointments. And trust me, I totally get it – maintaining locs is a journey, but a super rewarding one! Let's talk 'regular retwist' first. It's not just about neatness; it's crucial for the health and integrity of your locs. Regular retwisting helps to keep your new growth locked in, preventing unraveling and promoting healthy loc formation. Without it, your locs can start to thin at the roots or even break. For most of my clients, I recommend a retwist every 4-8 weeks, depending on their hair type, lifestyle, and how quickly their hair grows. Some prefer a tighter, more uniform look, while others embrace a more free-form or mature loc appearance, which might mean stretching out retwists a bit longer. It's all about finding what works for your loc journey! Now, onto 'the style' – this is where the real fun begins after a fresh retwist! My clients often come in with ideas, or sometimes they just say, 'Jade, surprise me!' and that's when my creative juices really start flowing. Beyond just a simple retwist, there are so many incredible loc styles you can try to totally transform your look. For everyday elegance, a classic barrel roll or a neat two-strand twist updo is always a winner. They keep your locs out of your face and look polished. If you're feeling a bit more playful, we can experiment with fishtail braids using your locs, or even create intricate patterns with cornrows that incorporate your locs. Half-up, half-down styles are also super popular – think a chic top bun with free-flowing locs, or even a braided crown. For a special occasion, I love creating elaborate updos with pinned locs or adding decorative accessories like beads and wraps to really make a statement. And for those times when you want a temporary change, remember you can always curl your locs! Rod sets or pipe cleaner sets can give you beautiful, bouncy curls that last for days after your retwist. A little personal tip from me: to make your styles last longer and keep your locs healthy, always sleep with a silk or satin scarf/bonnet. It reduces frizz and protects your locs from friction. Also, don't forget to moisturize your scalp and locs regularly – a light rosewater spray or a natural oil blend works wonders.
